Would it be pointless buying a soundcard for these speakers, or would I be better of buying better speakers. I don't want to buy a soundcard if I won't notice any difference from my onboard sound.

I'd stick with onboard. I use those speakers at Uni... whilst they are very good for the money, I don't think they possess the clarity really to show up the weaknesses in your onboard sound.

I use onboard sound and I hear distortion quite abit on heavy bass, you think thats something to do with the weakness of the onboard sound or the speakers?

a bit OT, but thinking of buying x-230's, and was wondering if i could lay the subwoofer flat on desk, as the height is a bit high at about 30cm...

Why would you want to lay it flat on the desk?, best place for any sort of sub is on the floor.

Motherboard sound is often horrific. If you try listening to music via good headphones on motherboard sound the amount of interference is unreal.

I've decided to bypass any chance of that by getting a USB DAC and AMP, in the form of the Headroom Total Bithead, as you can still get noise on the PCI lanes.
