My 2.1 speakers have died and its time for an upgrade. I would like a 5.1 system as i will be running DVD, 360 and my pc through them, hence the need for multiple inputs.

The Logitech’s look ideal however i have realized that i could get a decent av receiver for about £150 plus a decent pair of speakers for around the same price. Buying an av receiver would also allow me the option of upgrading to 5.1 in the future.

The following thread discusses this in detail but an amp is not sufficient for my needs as i need multiple inputs and 5.1 output.

Not sure which way to swing

(For those who like to go wild im only willing to spend about £300!)

Take the long term view.

Any money spent on PC speakers will be wasted when they fail in five years or less.

How do the z5500s compare to the separate setup? Im particularly interested in how punchy the bass is on the z5500s? My current 2.1 setup is very muddy.

You wont like the Z5500's if your out for punchy bass, they seem to be preety boomy, but saying that, i have mine in the corner because i like the bommyness :p, i am in a smaller room now, and the subwoofer is next to me, near the door of the room, the abss is bommy, but were i am the bass is infact really punchy, but also if your in a really small room, dont get the z5500's, the low end really gets sucked away by the floor and other stuff especially if its a cramped room.

Seperates from what i understand are much much much higher quality thana ny pc speakers in terms of sound and build, infact i am on my second set of z5500's after the amp died in the last one, i am expecting this set to die in less than a year time, then ima gonna get a refund from logitech and save up and get a nice seperates 2.1 system and then expand with that.

In the past i defended the Z5500's saying i bet there sound quality aint that much worse than seperates and you couldent get anything better quality for the price, proberbly 5.1 you couldent but 2.1 you could, but anyway i was obviously wrong. It seems that most High end PC speaker setups have lots of problems, for example the Klipsch Pro Media Ultra 5.1, the amp seems to die on them quicker than the z5500, and in the gigaworks S750, it seems like heat kills that one.

i'm in a simlar boat only i've got a decent AV sound kit and it's too much for my office.

i originally had the kit in my lounge until my daughter (who's now 14 months old) started to crawl. i've now moved it out of my lounge and into my office and onto my PC.

currently runnning a Denon 2802 amp and 2xKef Q1 and 1x Kef Q9c (centre)
i also have a couple of Kef Q2D's (rear) but they're still mounted on the wall in the lounge. also got REL Quake sub..which can seriously move some bass...

around £2k's worth of kit there..BUT

the whole setup is getting on my nerves as it's big and powerful and complete overkill for my small office.

what i want is something ok for gaming and music and will give me a better surround experience than traditional 2.1. i'm not expecting the earth for £200. but a simple setup for my PC would be great.

CARL i'd be very interested in your opinions also...as i read through your thread a couple of days ago and was wondering what you'd thought..
