Bikini queen aimed to show Pakistan as "modern"

Officials in Pakistan, which does not hold beauty pageants, said on Thursday they were investigating how Texas-based Mariyah Moten, 22, entered a "Miss Bikini" pageant in China last month as a Pakistani contestant.

"I have broken all the barriers, and in the coming years there will be other Pakistani contestants who will carry this title," Moten, described by Pakistani media as the country's first bikini queen, told the Times of India newspaper.

"My intention was to project Pakistan in a very modern way."

Pakistani authorities said they might take up the issue with China, and might also withdraw from Moten privileges offered to people of Pakistani descent such as visa-free travel to Pakistan.

"It is actually very amusing how they are always so ready to react," the daily quoted her as saying.

so is she infact showing that Pakistan is infact the opposite of anything resembling modernernistic behaviours, or what?! (courtesy of Reuters today!)

'It's not ironic its coincidental.'

Irony – The use of words expressing something other than their literal intention.

I dont really understand these contests. Do people just select a nice looking girl to represent their country, then she goes to this competition with girls from all over the world. Then a few judges vote, to see whos the nicest looking?

Don't trash the guy's thread please.

On topic - sounds like she doesn't live in Pakistan anymore, I shudder to imagine what would have happened to her when she she got back if she did.

after reading that thread about the hospital gowns, I was half expecting the contestants wearing giant head masks but in bikinis. :D

I think Pakistan and other muslim countries put contestants into Miss World - but they have to wear sarongs and stuff - certainly nothing so revealing as a bikini.

I can only imagine the reaction in Pakistan if their miss world contestant came out in a thong bikini

aye, she DID actually win a prize as the most photographed model... so not the main prize but a prize non the less!

still its strange how she can do it to prove how modern the population of her nation is, only for her national compatriots to condem her actions based out on an outdated code:)

also; "irony" "All the different senses of irony, however, revolve around the notion of incongruity, or a gap between our understanding and what actually happens. "

i.e her thinking that it shows mdernity, when infact this is incongrous with what is actually happening!
