Hi guys, I will be going for a interview for a job in London, Islington on Thursday, now, I want to know a couple of things, how much per month will it cost to travel from Reading station to Highbury & Islington tube station. Is there a monthly ticket I can buy? as the travel is within the zones.

Cheers guys.

Reading is outside of the zones. I bought an off peak day return from Reading to London including travelcard and it was £25. This was on Saturday just gone.
I was slightly surprised to say the least!

You will be able to get a season ticket or monthly pass, but prepare for a significant cost...

Where can I look for these monthly tickets/season tickets?

And yea, went to brixton the other weekend to see Deadmau5 from Reading, train fare hurt :(

Jesus thats expensive, my other alternative is traveling on the bike, motorways on a Ducati 748 is not good as it will kill the tyres and bike :(

But if it's cheaper in the long run (adding on servicing, tyres and petrol) then I will go for travel, how can I find out the congestion zones and stuff?

I travelled from Paddington to Reading last week and was surprised how quick and cheap it was, especially as I know people who take longer travelling to Watford. You usually save about 15% by buying a monthly rail card.

I used to have a Season Ticket for Reading -> London (including an all-zone travel card).

This will get you from Reading to London and then you can use the tube as much as you like when you are there.

I think my annual ticket was something like £3600 and the monthly was in the region of £370, its probably changed since then. You won't need to get an oyster card separately.

I can't find a season ticket that will do that.

I have created a very quick rough estimate of what will be cheaper.

The motorbike travel would be on a Ducati 748.

Travel
Train ticket for month:
£325.30 - Reading to Paddington – 1 month season ticket from Reading to Paddington
£99.10 - Zone 1&2 travel – 1 month cost on oyster card for Adult
Total - £424.40
Bike per month:
£320 Door to door
Roughly £15 - £17 per day
Yearly travel:
Train ticket for year (above multiplied by 12)
£3903.60 - Reading to Paddington – multiplied by 12 from above
£1189.20 - Zone 1&2 travel – multiplied by 12 from above
Total - £5092.80
Bike per year:
£3840.00 - Petrol door to door
£690.00 - 3x Tyre changes
£250.00 - 1x Chain renewal
Total - £4780.00 (estimate)

On the national rail website you should be inputting Reading to London Paddington, then scroll down and look for "READING STATIONS to 1-6"

An annual season from Reading with London Zones 1-6 travel is £4,028.00.
You don't need a rail ticket + an oyster, although by all means make comparisons as it can be cheaper if you're travelling less frequently.

tbh... I'd either move or if moving wasn't an option (partner, family, bought your own place etc..) then for a few grand more you could just rent a small studio for living in Mon-Thurs and you won't have to waste 2 hours of your life every day on a train...

As nice as that would be, I have tried looking into that, and overall, it would cost a bomb more.

try here:

https://www.swt.trainsfares.co.uk/season/requirements/st_buyTravelcard.asp

£386.70 for STANDARD MONTHLY
Reading Stations - Zone R1256 Zones

£4028.00 for STANDARD ANNUAL
Reading Stations - Zone R1256 Zones

Hope that helps.

That'll get you to London and any tube stop you want pretty much. And as much travel on the tube you want.

*edit*
Just looking at your link that is the same as the price for:

READING STATIONS to 1-6
Days/Months Price
7 Days £100.70
1 Month £386.70
3 Months £1,160.10
6 Months £2,320.20
12 Months £4,028.00

I commute every day from Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire to London. My Season Ticket with Chiltern Railways just cost me £3088. Reading is further away, so you're probably looking at the wrong side of £4000.

Haha, cheers guys, I am looking into getting a cheapo rice burner for a commuter as it would cost almost a grand less each year which is money in my pocket at the end of the day.

I will do a month on the tubes and see how it goes first though :)

You've not factored in the additional servicing that you will need when doing that mileage, other wear and tear items that will come up such as brakes.
then chain wax/lube, cleaning products etc. Will you need an additional security device when parking it in London? Do you have full wet weather gear that will stand up to 70mph+ riding day in day out in the pouring rain/sleet/snow?
Unless you think you'll really enjoy that ride I'd take the train. The train will certainly be cheaper and more comfortable.
I'd do it on the bike personally, but it would be cutting my nose off to spite my face, so to speak.

This is why I am thinking of getting a rice burner, FZR 400 or something.

Yea, got all the kit, I commute 50 miles a day on the Ducati as it is.

I have accounted for servicing and everything, would work out around the same price, I added on a £300 overflow as well as we all know what bikes are like lol.
