Hey,

Looking for some advice, got rid of my last car 5 years ago when I moved to London, now I am living with the GF we really need a car for shopping/weekends away/visiting her parents in the country side, we are inside of the ulez zone so looking for a Hybrid, 4 door with room in the boot for pram as we are looking to have a kid in the next year or two, also cannot be to low as we will be using it to go to see her families horses and that's a non maintained road, not off road but a car to low would be a problem. Looking to spend between 23-35, was looking at the Mitsubishi outlander phev but they just dont like somewhere i would want to sit for 2-4 hours on a trip, I liked the Lexus UX but the GF is worried about room in the car. any others we should be looking at?

New Honda Civic is a good hybrid. Toyota has a good new Prius coming out. Both might not be able to handle the offroad though.

Volkswagen has a Tiguan hybrid, not sure on price though.

For even light "off-road" I'd lean towards the Tiguan, or even Touareg if you want something larger, they have credible capability in adverse conditions - a lot of modern "SUVs" either lack for ground clearance and/or are junk off-road.

EDIT: Interesting in the CarExpert roundup the Outlander did significantly better than the Tiguan off-road - though the newer models aren't as good as the old Tiguan IMO off-road and not sure the tyre setups were quite equivalent.

I'd suggest a look at the Mazda range. The CX-5 has a petrol hybrid option and they're decent cars.

Good cars but ground clearance and off-road capabilities let it down a bit if you actually need that.

EDIT: Though on that note the latest generation of Tiguans in sport trims do sacrifice some ground clearance compared to the older models which isn't ideal.

Kona or Niro? (I would go full EV myself if you have off-road parking but they do hybrid as well)

for reference top of the range 2020 long range Kona with under 40k on the clock was for sale near me for 19k yesterday. had I not got an ipace 3 weeks ago I would have nabbed it.

ipace also worth a look. optionally has air suspension if you want to increase ground clearance. I love mine but the face lifted late 2020 car (with better AC charging, some reliability improvements and onboard infotainment upgrade is right at the top of your budget and it's EV only)
