Why let logic and reasoning spoil a good old immigrant bashing thread?

Why do they have the right to vote if they cannot read and write the country's language? It's something we expect of our own citizens; yet we accept it from people we expect to prove their worth to enter the country, seems a little unfair, no?

You don't have to be a British citizen to vote in the London Mayoral election and quite right too given the number of people working and living in the city who will be impacted by the election of that person. The only oddity really is that it's a strange group of eligible voters where Indians, Pakistanis, South Africans, Canadians and Australians (and any other Commonwealth citizen) can vote in their massess but any US Citizens living in London, for example, get a resounding no :p

Personally I think citizenship or qualified residency should be more than enough to be eligible to vote, it always strikes me as a little unfair that you have people who work, pay taxes etc, yet get no say in their governance.

We were bad enough to let a great number of people in who don't speak English, we now need to deal with the consequences, which is either teaching them English or printing lots of stuff in various languages.

My understanding is that people aren't getting in now until they speak English, but it's too late.

In my opinion someone who doesn't speak English is at a serious disadvantage in society, and needs to learn. And yes, there's a cost involved in that, however it should ripple back into benefit the economy.

Only British citizens should be eligible to vote, someone who has just arrived here and doesn't speak English isn't likely to be a British citizen. Why we allow people to become British citizens who can't speak or read English is beyond me.

Because we have many home grown oxygen thieves who can barely speak or read english?

they just don't bother to integrate and they actively segregate themselves in enclaves.

If i claimed asylum or wanted to live in Somalia would i as a UK citizen be able to vote in their elections? And if so would they print out all the information in English just for me?
