London Underground to get mobile phone coverage

Can't get behind the paywall, but i assume this is the platform only? When I was in a meeting with TFL a few years ago about WiFi and mobile signal in the tunnels their view was that it would require so much work that it would be far too expensive. There is little space between the trains and the tunnels in lots of cases so they would need to dig out spaces for the boxes and cables - difficult to do overnight as well.

This will risk breaching normal Tube etiquette of not speaking to anyone, right up there with no making eye contact and always standing on the right.

But it will greatly enhance people's ability to tweet or post to Facebook about breaches of this etiquette.

Thousands of people standing shoulder to shoulder on small crowded train platforms taking no notice as to what is going on around them.

What could possibly go wrong??

Had virgin media wireless for ages 2012¿ but now voice and 4g?

Sod this. It was bad enough on the train home from. Liverpool Street everynight.

"I just got on the train home, yeah, yeah, ok, yeah, I'll ring when I get to Romford/shenfeild/etc... "X1000

People walking out to the platform and falling on to the tracks because they were updating FB status and not looking where they were going... :D

There is already free wifi in stations :p

I'd be happy with wifi in tunnels, no need for voice.

Handy if you get separated from someone who doesn't know their way around. (took a friend into London who wasn't used to the hustle and bustle of getting on the tube quickly before the door shuts) The look of fear on his face when I saw him standing outside on the platform as the train departed was funny to me, but obviously not to him :D being able to have phoned him to say "don't panic you big pansy, get on the next one" would have been useful :p

last time i went to london i was surprised (in these days of health and safety) that there wasn't some kind of gated fence between the platform and track, anyone can push somebody or fall onto it and nothing there to stop them

The cost to put PEDs in is hugely prohibitive. And there have been so little/few incidents that it probably doesn't warrant the cost.

Also there is already wifi on most of the underground network in London.
