Hello there! Ive been following these forums for years for advice, but never posted before, but 5 years after my last build, I realise I am completely out of touch, so could use some help! My current setup is as follows -

CPU - Intel Q6600 clocked to 3GHz
MoBo - Asus Maximus Formula
RAM - 4x 1GB OCZ Platinum 2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz
GPU - GeForce GTX 560Ti 1024MB
HDD - OCZ Agility 3 240GB SATA III (running via StarTech 2 Port SATA 6 Controller Card)

I bought the CPU/MoBo combo back in '07 when I was still keeping track of things for its ease of over clocking,
and have been hanging new components off an increasingly ageing setup for a while now... so..... Time to upgrade!
Ideally I am after something with the same philosophy as the original setup, good performance due to ease of overclock.
The rig will be mostly used for gaming.

What would be my best CPU/MoBo/RAM/Cooler combo for a max of £400?

are the bundles any good, I was looking at this - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-116-OE

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £184.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £127.99
1 x Alpenföhn K2 Mount Doom CPU Cooler (Socket LGA1156/1155/1366/AM2/AM2+/AM3/AM3+/FM1) £59.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX) £23.99
Total : £408.36 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Bit over, but worth it i think.
Those bundles are good, but if you can build it yourself (which everybody can) then you can do much better.

You do need to make sure that cooler will fit in your case.

3570k is the right way to go, steer clear of the bulldozers, they aren't as good for gaming.

Remote's spec is very good. That cooler is a monster, wioll keep temps nice and low and be whisper quiet.

If you want to bring it under budget, swap the mobo for the Z77X-DH3

I wouldnt exactly call that a 'long overdue' upgrade. My sig rig was an upgrade from a P4 Northwood @ 3.2, 2GB of DDR and a x800 :D

But yeah, the way to go is definitely the 3570K. The i5 Sandy/Ivy CPU's are amazing bits of kit, and they overclock so well. You would have to be unlucky to get a 3570K that can't do at least 4.5GHz.

This new motherboard from MSI is the first to be 'OC certified' so it should clock the CPU extremely well in theory but it is a bit pricey:

Or if you want to save a few pennies go with one of the Gigabyte boards mentioned above:

8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 should be plenty:

Thanks for all the helpful advice :) Pretty unanimous on the CPU, and I am sold, definately the way to go. That cooler is a beast, and I fell in love with it the moment I saw it, so thats a no brainer too!

the only quandry you have left me with is the Motherboard! I am firm believer in the motherboard being as important as the CPU, so dont really want to scrimp there, and a few pounds over budget shouldnt hurt TOO badly :) so it comes down to two

I guess it comes down to just how good is that MSI? Looking at it I am very tempted, and an extra £20 shouldnt really break the bank!

My case is and Antec P182 super midi tower, I am away from my computer at the moment, so can't check, but I know the PSU is an OCZ unit, I THINK it might be 1000w, but can say for definate it is more than 600w, because I can find the 600w one it replaced in my order history.

I have to admit, I do like to get the best I can afford when upgrading, toys and extras are always nice, and to be as futureproofed as I can be for as long as possible is also nice!
