Well the time has come...

An XP1700+ @ 2Ghz and a clocked 9500 PRO just doesn't cut the mustard anymore. :(

The time has come to part with £400 or so and start playing the likes of Bioshock and Oblivion (which will keep the Misses of my back for splashing the cash).

I need:
Motherboard
Memory
CPU
Video Card
Case
PSU

I was thinking along the lines of:
Abit IP35-E (clocks and supports upcoming intel chips)
2GB Geil PC6400
E2140 (a moderate clock will be good enough to play any game and I'd rather spend the money on the video card)
8800GT (will wait for the 256MB vs 512MB benches to decide as I play @ 1280x1024)
and...

Sonata III (inc 500W PSU)
or....
PC7+ and a corsair VX450

That comes to a touch over £400 but it should fit the bill for now and I can always go for a faster CPU / V card / more RAM at a later date as required.

Your thoughts ladies and gentlemen?
Many thanks

'tis a nice spec and well worth the money :) If you clock the cpu up you may want an aftermarket cooler ( Tuniq tower ) to guarantee nice temps at 3ghz+.

But you'll get it to 2.8 atleast on the stock cooler!

Looks fine, either of the PSU+case options will do as they are solid enough PSUs so I guess it probably comes down to personal preference which case you prefer the look of. :)

Thanks for the quick response fellas.

TBH 2.6 - 2.8 GHz would likely be enough to face anything a game can throw at it for now. If I get 3.2 I'll consider it a bonus. I can always go quad core when they hit < £50 in a year or so ;)

Looks like the case is the deciding factor. Might let the boss decide as if there's not a lot between the two her opinion on the looks will probably decide it! :)

Got the E2140, GA-P35C-DS3R, 512MB 8800GT, Sonata III and 2GB Corsair.

Heresay I know, but after moving from my spec above I'm too busy enjoying to clock it yet!

Oh - and apart from faster it's a lot quieter than my Juno with 5 (count'em) 80mm YS-techs!
