Hi all,

In need of some advise for solutions in getting a security system set up for a farm, initially the setup is going to be a single camera at the primary entrance to the farm. We need to be able to access the camera remotely due to not being around 24/7, with the current broadband providing 10/2Mbps speeds.

An issue I'm facing at the minute is identifying the best solution for getting internet connectivity to the entrance, this is some 65m in range from the farmhouse that contains the broadband connection.

From what I can tell my options are:
  • 4G security camera system
  • Point to point WiFi solution (Line of sight can be obtained fairly easily)
  • SWA CAT5e/6 from the farmhouse along the hedgerow to the area needed

Does anyone have recommendations for cheap point to point WiFi solutions that'd be suitable for this? I'm somewhat loathed to spend a large amount on a higher spec point to point WiFi solution when in the next year a new water pipe will be trenched to the farmhouse that will pass through the area in need of a camera, in which I can lay CAT6

MikroTik Wireless Wire is my preferred option. Either the LHG units for fastest throughput or the Cube units for 60GHz and 5GHz AC for a backup option in severe rain or snow.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'm somewhat surprised to not see a speed rating on their website for the products, I guess I'll hunt through other places for a review of their speed

What do you mean? The LHG units are rated at 2Gbps over 1000m but they only have 1Gbps RJ45 ports so they have big buffers to ensure the connection is kept saturated. The cubes are rated at 1Gbps over 60GHz and 300Mbps over 5GHz, both over 1km. Over 1km and the speeds drop off, but you’re not going over 1km so you should see full line speed ie. 1Gbps.
