I've recently got a new PC but have still been using the old speakers that I have been using for years, so have decided to finally get a 5.1 system. I use my computer almost exclusively for gaming so it is the surround sound which is the biggest reason for me wanting to upgrade.

I am running Vista 64-bit and have realtek HD audio onboard sound. What 5.1 system + (if necessary) soundcard would you recommend for about £100? I'm currently looking at getting a Logitech X-540 5.1 system and possibly an X-fi Xtreme audio PCI-E. However I'm not sure whether the sound card is needed considering the cost of the speakers, and have heard problems concerning Creative cards and Vista.

Any input would be much appreciated :)

Seperate card takes load off the CPU I read - certainly found my system seemed a little smoother than with on board AC97. and would expect same if using on board HD sound.
I am not sure of technical terms but believe that to get round problems that creative has with vista and games you need creative's Alchemy sofware (a free download).- have a read yourself , you'll probably understand it far better than me!
I have read good reviews of the Logitech x-540 speakers - if you've read any of the other threads you will know that I own a set of logitech G51 speakers which I have been very impressed with.
If of interest Custom PC did a review on the G51's in its Feb issue
Certainly if cost is an issue (& when isn't it?) probably best approach is use on board sound for now ; you could always buy a card later
