Hi. Its time to upgrade. I've spent quite a lot of time browsing the OCUK shop and realised I'm very much out of the loop. I'm trying to keep it around £500.
I'm currently running an i7 3770 and 16 gig of ancient RAM. I see that most of the i3 13th gen are a lot better than my 3770. I want to stick win an Intel processor. If it wasnt for Win11 I probably wouldnt upgrade at all, it runs all the latest games. But saying that; its been about 15 years since I bought myself anything new so a) I deserve it and b) I'll have fun doing it.

What I currently have:
1080p monitor - keep
Sata SSD - Keep - Although I see there are new SSD that are smaller and fit directly on the MB?
Coolmaster 550w - Keep - Hopefully
2070 super - Keep
Processor/MB/RAM - Replace

Mine will be the first of two PCs that will need to be brought up to spec ready for the likes of Win11.
So what I'm hoping I'll need is
Motherboard - I have a large case, not looking at mini atx
32 gig RAM - DDR5?
Intel processor - I'll take a wild guess that my fan will no longer fit the new MB so it will have to come with one.

Any help would be gratefully recived.

The i5-13500 has 4 more E-Cores than the 13400 and a better IGP. You could save a little money on the 13400 by dumping the IGP (13400F) but they can be handy for troubleshooting.

I don't know if there's any meaningful difference between the 14th gen non-K and 13th gen non-K parts. I suspect not, because everything appears to be the same, except for a small increase in clock speed.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £503.98 (includes delivery: £3.99)

Suggest this cooler if you're not happy with the stock one.

Going DDR4 would get you a better CPU (the non-K has a different cache config, which is part of why it is faster for gaming, even though it has the same number of cores as the i5-13500).

The B760 DS3H has USB flashback, but no overclocking (except for memory).

Total: £503.96 (includes delivery: £3.99)

What's the model name?

I assume you're aware that you can install it?

I know you said Intel but just giving you options.

You can get a Ryzen 5600 , b550 motherboard and 32gb ddr4 3200 MHz for around £300.

Alternatively AM5 7600 build with ddr5 within budget

.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I can see you help out a lot in this forum so I was happy to see a selection very similar to the hardware I was looking at. Although I am thinking of the i3 to save a bit for now.
To answer your question, yes I'm aware but I think its time to catch up with the newer hardware and with the support that will inevitability dwindle with the other software I use I think its for the best. And you know, because getting new hardware is fun :D

Its undinable that the Rysen are very tempting and I'll check out your suggestions, thankyou. I can also see you are an avid helper of people like me so I know your advice runs true. I went away from Intel once and it didnt end up going well, but that was down to my ignorance of AMD.

Kind words thank you.

As your not a heavy user it makes sense and with £600 you can upgrade both pcs even less if you drop to16gb of memory and cheaper motherboard

One thing I would consider is getting a m2 drive to take advantage of the latest tech s 1tb can be had around £40 mark.

Example

5600 £125.
ASUS TUF Gaming B550-PLUS WI-Fi £125
32gb 3200mgz £60

The i3 is a great budget CPU and would leave a decent upgrade path, but personally I'd rather have at least the i5-12400 (IGP-less 12400F is available pretty cheap too, only £15-£20 or so more than the i3-12100), just because you're getting an upgrade on core/thread count, as well as single core/thread.

And you know, because getting new hardware is fun :D

I was looking at the new SSDs after what mickyflinn said, mine is currently only 500gb so a 1tb would be nice. How good is the below drive at that price range?

It seems its a gen 3 where there are gen 4 available.

It is likely to be bottom of the barrel. In the 1TB capacity it is QLC and the endurance is only 100 TB (3 year warranty) :o , whereas the SN570 or SN580 are TLC and rated to 600 TBW.

For a secondary drive, it is probably fine, but I definitely wouldn't buy one for an OS.
