Just picked up a netgear powerline starter kit, installed and works fine. However, when the pc is restarted or started from cold as it were, it can take up to 2 mins to actually connect to the net (there a red "X" covering the connection icon in the taskbar which disappears when connected). is this normal, can it be configured to connect quicker or is this probably me pc setup/antivirus checking things first before allowing connection. this is vista 32bit btw.
It takes this amount of time everytime, but when connected, it stays and works fine, got good download speeds too.

My homeplugs are on 24/7 and are instantly fully functional after boot. If i turn them off then yes i have to wait a while for them to get an IP Address which is around a minute.

Maybe theres a conflict somewhere?

Yep, same here, homeplugs once connected to mains are never turned off. Its not a serious prob (unless you've got no patience at all:p) as it always ends up connecting and it stays connected as well for as long as the pc is on. I had a netgear wireless adapter installed previously and uninstalled it before installing the homeplugs, but there may be a conflict some where with that prior netgear software.

Edit: Just did a bit investigation and found that "svchost.exe" in the task manager was working quite hard (cpu useage about 50%) and as soon as it stopped, a short time after the pc connected to the internet. I'm beginning to wonder if "nod32 antivirus is interfering and not allowing to connect for a bit.
Any ideas?
