Look for a new gpu.

What res does your monitor support?

Off the top of my head I thought of an overclocked 580 / 7950 rather than spending top whack on a 7970.

Overall, how has sli been for you?

I might side step to a pair of 6950s for the more ram.

Good idea. If you can, get a couple with some decent coolers on. If it wasn't for the fact that you need more vram then you could just pick up a couple of coolers for the 470's, but seeing as you want more memory the 6950's make good sense. Trying to out gun the 470's with a single card will be hard to do even with some of the fastest single gpu cards.

1920x1080.

Would like a card with more vram than 1gb also.

SLI been fine just the heat and noise they make.

Being 470's they will produce more heat and noise. It was a known issue with that generation of Nvidia cards. If you had 2 570's in SLi I'd bet theyd run much cooler and quieter. Your not going to find many single cards that'll beat 2470's in SLi. Maybe the 7970 or the GTX590 but they are expensive and extreme options. You could try 2x570's. That would be cooler, quieter and better in performance. Or you could wait to see what the Kepler cards are like if you can wait a little while
