Looking at a E6550 for new build

I'm making a new machine, and need some CPU advice please.

I'm looking at the Asus P5k-E WiFi mobo, and debating which cpu to get. I'm considering an E6550 and wondered if anyone has any experience with this chip and has any suggestions. This is for a gaming rig primarily, and I will overclock conservatively (havn't done it in a while) at first - I will be purchasing a Corsair HX 620 for power.

cheers

For a few bucks more I would be looking at an 8200 or 8400. But if I was spending that much on a CPU and absolutely wanted one now, I would go the extra mile and get the Q6600, As it is , I bought an E2180 a couple of months ago, and will wait and see what the Q9450's are like.

I cant spend more on the cpu, but I see where you are coming from. After looking over my options, ive gone over budget here and there so will follow your lead with a similar purchase and see how my new build performs. Thanks for the info :)

im using the E6550.. i bought the E8400 to replace it, but figured it wouldnt be much of an upgrade so i RMA'd it for a refund. im running the e6550 @ 3.5 1.45v stable. temp at 45deg on 8 hour prime95. since you said you wanted to overclock it, i suggest you get/upgrade to a pc6400 or pc8000 memory (if you havent got one yet) since the e6550 only has a multiplier of x7. also a good cooler would do.

thanks for the info bimmerboii, I am still very interested in the E6650, but decided to opt for a budget cpu for now and upgrade soon. This is because I have moved some of my budget to a better mobo and ram to facilitate a future cpu upgrade - will keep your info in mind though, many thanks

You won't regret it, overclocked, the E2*** series offer serious bang per buck. I'm not exactly chomping at the bit to upgrade mine yet!

bimmerboii what settings are your cpu at and whats your motherboard and ram. Whats your fsb?

Going for a E2200 is a bad move when the far superior E5200 only cost's £3 more. I certainly would'nt be buying a P35 motherboard either unless it is extremely cheap. If you look around you can get P43 boards for £60.
