Hi all,

I have a very nice personalised email address but due to growing up and moving out and the internet connection changing at home i will not be able to use it anymore. I dont want a gmail or something, i want it to be personal like the one i had before, so it has my name and no extra numbers etc. and ideally @mysurname.

From what i found so far i just have to purchase a domain from any of the many companies online and that will allow my to have an email address like that. But i'd quite like to know what else i can expect or how i can benefit from other services that may be provided in the package.

Thanks

Do i need SSL? if i dont plan to host a website. Will it make my account more secure?

If you start by purchasing the domain from somewhere lik 123-reg.co.uk you can then set up the email side of things using Google Apps. Just sign up for a free account (click) and it'll take you through setting all the MX records etc.

A lot of web hosts might offer the domain, email & hosting all in one package, but if you go with Google Apps then you get all the benefits - tons of space, decent webmail, push, IMAP, POP, calendars, etc.

Then if you decide you'd like a website you can buy some hosting somewhere (vidahost, tsohost). You would then just need to point the DNS record(s) to the hosting.

Well that sounds as simple as i thought it might be which is nice but i guess its not quite like that in the real world.

The only bit i dont get is this: "You would then just need to point the DNS record(s) to the hosting."

*Ignore this*
