Right after looking all over about PS3s im still well confused about it all.

Personally I'd like to have it be able to play PS2 games, although even if you can find one of the 4 USB port 60/80Gb versions its not 100% support.

Im going to be wacking a 2.5" 7200RPM 200Gb in there anyway so HD size is irrelevant.

So is it worth finding one (New 80Gb unsure of version is £280) or just getting a 40gb for £240 and buying a new PS2 for like £40?

Personally rather just have one console rather than two.

So is it still possible to get the backwards compatible PS3s?

(I'll be using it for blu-ray and GT5! :))

Cheers

I can confirm that no, FSX will not play on a PS3 in case you were wondering ;)

No available SKU supports PS2 backwards compatibility and considering 60Gb PS3s arent in warranty now I couldnt recommend getting one 2nd hand anymore. The 80Gb SKU you are thinking of was NTSC and so isnt the same as the 80Gb SKU currently available (i.e. isnt backwards compatible to PS2)...

160Gb PS3 could be handy for you considering the extras you get (you get a few PSN games including GT5P)

ps3ud0

Remember theres a rumoured price drop for april so may be worth waiting a while also almost any laptop hdd works on a ps3.Bare that in mind when you think about buying a 160gb model.

You can probably still find the older backwards compatible PS3 models on auctions sites and such, but probably not worth the price they may go for.

Although it is much easier to have one console, you can easily get a PS2 for cheap and I personally would prefer to have both anyways. It saves wear and tear from using PS1/PS2 games on the PS3's Blu-Ray drive.

I mean if the PS3 in a rare situation would breakdown, then you will have nothing, unless you have the Wii360 or other games system :p.

I already have the 200Gb HD, its a left over from my MBP to MBP and desktop transition.

But It will be april by the time I buy so thats fine.

Is it for the start of April or mid or late?

How much do PS3 HDs go for, is there some silly PS tax on them so they go for more than they are actually worth?

I'd rather buy a 40Gb tbh but i'll have a look at the 160gb prices...

Edit: Sod that, the 160Gb with the freebies is >£400!

I can get a 40Gb, 2nd controller, HDMI cable and GT5 for £330ish!

Edit 2: Is the 160Gb 45nm!? Although I dont see why that would sway me for £100 more!
Edit 3: ok found the 160gb special edition for £340, but thats £380 when I add the HDMI + 2nd controller :/

They just use a standard 2.5" SATA drive so no silly sales tax on them. You are probably better off getting the best deal you can on a 40GB & then just changing the drive yourself.

Well no i mean if I buy the 160gb and then put my 200Gb 7200RPM in there (which I already have ;)) what would the 160gb go for? Roughly the same as normal HDs I guess?

Are the 40Gbs 45nm yet?

From what i've heard rumours state a new price of £199.99 for a 80gig. Whether this will be the RRP or the price at which retailers offer it (retailers obviously typically undercut the RRP slightly when they can) is anyones guess. Considering my parents nabbed a 80gig for £258 in January i don't see it being an incredibly unlikely figure.

Sauce? Sony recently announced that they are not planning any price cuts.

I think there will be a price cut but to go to £199 would be a rather big jump - I would be very surprised if it was that much.

Ok well i've found a 80gb for a reasonable price so I guess im going for that in the near future.

Next question, can I use the optical audio out into my Mac Pro and then output sounds to my speakers like that?

Cheers.

Should be able to, you'll just need to set the audio output in the PS3 settings to optical. Either that, or buy a couple of cheap adapters and connect the PS3 and your computer to the speakers at the same time:

Is the optical socket on your mac optical-input or is it output only? If it's output only then it won't work.
