Right i would like a tablet PC.

So far i have looked at:

iPad
Archos 9
Dell streak (Yes i know it's just a big phone)

I like the fact the archos 9 runs Windows 7, BUT i cannot find anywhere local that stocks them :( so i cannot have a look at it. o2 and CPW don't seem to stock the dell streak on payandgo, and i feel i might regret the iPad.

What other options do i have? Is there anything comming out in the next couple of months i should hold out for? Or is there something out now i have not looked at?

I prefer to have a play with something like this before i buy, but if it's something really good id take the risk.

Budget is a max of £500 with the larger screen the better

Hi Neodite, I keep my ear to the ground regarding tablets and pads.

I find a lot of info from:

jkkmobile

netbooknews

carrypad

shanzai.com

armdevices.net

I got the rss feeds on my homepage for these.

Looks like a lot of nvidia tegra2 powered pads are coming out this side of crimbo, mainly running android.

So much choice coming soon.

Yes eagerly awaiting the samsung tablet, it looks like you can do voice calls on it too, obviously Id use a BT headset as at 7" it would be a little large, the streak looks interesting too but they need to get 2.2 android on it sharpish. I had an ipad but got rid as it just has too many limitations, the main being flash for me.

My only worry is access to the Android market place - I believe Google only allow it from devices that can make calls, so it remains to be seen if the Samsung tablet will have access or not. If not, I'd be inclined to wait until such time as Google remove the restriction.

Well a couple of days after i made this topic i gave up and got an iPad :( lol

Didn't want something as small as 7inc and using VNC to connect to a small Windows 7 PC under my bed gives me want i want for now.

Still going to be on the look out for a Windows 7 tablet that is worth it

try the Acer 1420p its a hybrid laptop/tablet.

I bought one the other week for £450 great battery life the touch screen is great as well and it comes with a stylus too so you can use that or your fingers. It also has a mode where you can switch between the 2 so that you can use the handwriting software in windows 7 with the stylus without having to worry about your hand being on the screen (its hard for me to explain)

the only thing I didnt like about it was the amount of bloatware that comes on it but I reinstalled windows the minute I got it and then a couple of days later added a 90gb vertex SSD.

its very light and thin as well with and 11 inch screen and it can play high def videos.
The graphics chip is the only real downfall but I only use it to play simple games such as the original age of empires

The 7in Samsung Galaxy Tab does look great, but it needs to be priced right.

I can't see it being less than the 5in Dell Streak @ £399.

The 9.7in Apple Pad is £529 with Wi-Fi and 3G.

Best of waiting till Christmas. Lot's of tablets being released then, by most manufacturers.
Personally I think you need a 10" to make the most use of a tablet.

Hanspree one looks interesting and should be around £320 and running android.
As does the archos 10" should also be around £320
In fact they all seem to be suggesting £320 price tag.

I just can't understand why it is taking them this long.

Anyone remember the Win 7 based Pegatron tablet that was shown off CES 2010? Out of all the tablets that were shown off, this was probably my favourite.

Well it seems an Israeli blog has leaked some more details of it recently. I believe its currently being called the Pegatron Masterpad and is reported to have a 1.6ghz Atom cpu, 1gb RAM, 32gb solid state drive, wifi (and optional 3G version), 11.6" IPS screen, 2x USB ports, 1.3mp Camera plus a few other bits.

Rumours of it being released by Gigabyte in this country are also emerging. The few bits of info I've read seem to suggest it's due out any time now??

How is Windows Mobile Marketplace and does it work with windows 7 or just mobile? Without that being very good. Running windows 7 is a massive downside and makes a tablet pointless IMO.

Any one know of any confirmed release dates for 10" models. Lodging away with work a lot more and really need one. Why has it taken them so long.

What are you actually looking for?

The term "tablet" gets bandied around a lot, getting misused along the way.

A "tablet" is a laptop with a touchscreen the turns it some way to fold flat, it has all the things a normal laptop does, keyboard, touchpad etc.
A "slate" is just like the screen of a normal laptop, like the iPad.

Tablets are more expensive that slates, but a lot more useful, I have two, a Toshiba M750 which is my main laptop/tablet, it goes everywhere with me, and a part broken Toshiba M700, which the M750 replaced.
These are expensive though, so don't look at them unless you go second hand.

If you want a cheap but really good tablet, the HP Touchsmart TM2 is exceedingly good, Windows 7, /dedicated GPU, webcam, multitouch but more than you said if you want it new.

Think about why you want a tablet though, most people wont use it the touchscreen for anything other than playing and a bit of reading maybe, I use it for uni work as I'm a Maths student.

They stock the TM2 is large John Lewis' and Harrods in London, not seen it anywhere else if you wanted a go.
