My Dad has just replaced his ST24 with a Merc CLK 220 after wanting one for ages and I've always liked it and need to replace my mk2 2.0 mondeo before it completely falls apart!

I drove it at the weekend for the first time and found the gearbox a bit weird, the stick doesn't "ping" back into the middle when I move it side to side and its a lot stiffer than mine too. Is this normal?

How much would you pay for a 80k miles X reg ST24 in good nick?

He said he'd service it before I bought it off of him but is there anything else I should look out for?

Chees all :)

I would buy it for £800.

As for the gears this is not normal, one thing i loved about the ST24 I had was the great gear change.

I am not an expert but could this be something to do with a gear linkage?

I thought the shift on mine was stiffer than some other cars I've driven, but it was OK. My insurance paid out 1800 quid for my V reg 80K miles example last year, but I often see reasonable examples on ebay for less than a grand...

Check for rust on the back arches and bootfloor (ford underseal is skimpy near the boot floopan..) and make sure the waterpump has been changed (original ones are plastic and can break...) otherwise I never had any issues with mine....

If you cant trust your dad who can you trust :)

Oh I trust him alright, it just made me wonder. I'm sorta half assuming its just possible a spring on the actual shifter that stops it flicking back and the fact it has been driven half the mileage that mine has that makes it feel a lot stiffer in comparison!
I'm sure he'd get it sorted if it was damaged - afterall he is happy to service it before I have it off of him :)

Found the clutch more difficult than the gearbox mind - biting point is completely different to mine lol - only drove it around the block so didn't get a chance to get used to it :p

I'll enquire about the water pump.

My brother bought a decent one with a private number plate and 89k for just shy of £1500.

As said above if you cant trust your dad who can you trust?

The bad thing is that some imbecile fitted 17" fox 5 alloys to it and completely spoiled the look of it, he's now looking for a decent set of ford original alloys or something else that's actually worth putting onto it.

Yeh they really don't look like they'd look good on an ST24.
I can't say I'm a massive fan of the standard 4 spoke alloys.

Sounds like the pivots need greasing maybe. Has it been stood for along period of time without any use?
Yeh it does get left alone for long periods of time, He is often away for a few days at a time due to being away in his truck and often cycles to work anyway. Think he has only done 5k miles in the last 3 years!

Its more than likely that then its really easy to do if you know what you are doing, if not just get a garage to do it, and get a gear box oil changed whilst you're at it. I paid £70 to have both done at a local Honda dealer on a Civic to give you an idea of cost, once it was done the gear change felt like new
