Hey guys need some advise i currently own a Nissan Primera and im beggining to find that it's becoming expensive with parts, things going wrong ect also tax which is £108 for 6 months fuel is 35Mpg.

im looking at the scrappage scheme which has been extended to 31st March, and quite interested in the peugeot 307 at £150 a month, which is within my budget, the only question i have is in regards to their credit checks

does it work the same as banks, what credit agents do they check?

Equifax which i hate with passion give me a low score as they critize you if you missed or late with payment whereas experian give me a high score, or do they mainly look at CCJ's and not at your history which was over 4-5 years ago ?

I have nothing to add other than please don't buy a Peugeot 307. It's one of the crappest cars in existence. I'd rather have a broken Primera.

well whats wrong with it, so you would rather pay £500 in parts when the car is only worth about £300????

Depends what the parts are, but its likely that this will be the only £500 you'll need to spend on it for some time.

Not sure why people are obsessed with how much the car is worth when deciding to repair it or not. Surely its value is irrelevent unless you were particularly looking to sell it?

Whoever provides the finance will get your credit file from one or more of the CRA's, and generate their own score. If you have a low "score" right now, you can't have missed payments 4-5 years ago because they only hold 3 years worth of account history.

Ok what other cars would you suggest ?

i definately looking to scrap it, instead of having to loaf out loads of money to keep it on the road.

well my history back in 2007 - 2008 wasn't that great which has unfortunately affected my score

Lol my car is an R-1996 model, 117k on the clock the Good Old SRI Model, however im sick of paying out £108 each time for tax, Parts which aren't cheap, i need something more reliable, dont get me wrong it's a pretty quick car. but id rather save my cash in the long run and not have to worry about thing that are going to go wrong with it.

What is wrong with it then ? Primera's are quite reliable cars usually ? Certainly surprised there's something wrong at that mileage, was it driven only in towns or whatever ? I think I'd want a Primera easily over a 307 too.

You still need to pay tax on another car

And paying £150 a month to save cash?

Best thing you can do is get the car in good condition and then sell it. Then buy something outright for a couple of thousand.

Ok cheers guys, my MOT last september was pretty expensive, the drivers side Hub and bearings was nackered and lower arm kingping joint, full repair would have cost me £750 i had to get second hand parts, Advisory was my brakes are binding, which sounds like the calipers are seizing. Cat is nackered luckly i can get one for £29 quid. Unfortunately due to ammount of Pot Holes around my steering has become shuddy a lot of vibrations from the front! Damn Potholes! i dont have normal size tires, there low profile where if you hit a small pot hole it's like hitting a brick.

i did begin doing small mods, like induction kit ect... but the last MOT repair that i had put me off it abit :(

I can understand you are fed up of ploughing your cash into a banger that you clearly want to get rid off.
Just be aware that the scrappage scheme means you have to buy a new car in turn meaning you will take all the depreciation hit that any sensible buyer would avoid by buying a 6 month old car. You also forfeit any ability to haggle or get a good deal. Scrappage means 'here it is, it's this much - take it or leave it"
You'd have got a better deal pre-scrappage by haggling.

Also, forget about the road tax. Spending £8000 to save £50 annually is utter lunacy.

I'd love a new car, but if you are on a budget, and you clearly are, don't do it thinking you'll save money. You simply won't.

Lastly, the 307 is an utter turd. If you are going to buy brand new at least buy something decent.

credit checks being marked down as you missed payments! who would have thought!

buying tax 6 monthly never works out well, buying annually will save you a little bit.

also to reinforce what others have said, 307 is not a great choice and you can normally get at least as good a deal haggling before you involve the scrappage scheme. Its just an easy way out for people who can't / don't like negotiating etc.

If you can find a car that is better than it for £1000, get it. If you can't then don't bother and repair the current one. It's all about total cost. To buy a car on finance is at the "extremely costly" end of the scale.
