It's been a while since I looked at VR on the PC so just wondering what a decent headset is now.

Will probably be used mostly with Sim racings games at desk but also some good VR games like HL.

I tried the PSVR2 headset around christmas time but found it really awkward to setup.

Does it work OK with the PC though, when I was looking last year I couldn't really find a proper answer
quest 3 and it's predecessor have been working fine on pc for years - assuming the pc is up to it. yea there's been a gremlin or 2 to be found but bugs etc are relatively few. not sure where you were looking that wasn't giving you a proper answer.

Id definitely go down the Quest 3 route. There are far better headsets available with higher resolution but even with a 5090 you will be struggling at getting decent FPS with.certain titles.

if your using meta quest 3 then you would want to look at these software:
metalink
Steamlink
virtualdesktop - Paid
ALVR

so far im using virtualdesktop either wireless or wired with a network cable and mobile docking station.

pc set up is a few more steps ect and doesnt feel as refined? as meta in some cases but its been good so far for me, and my use case.

All headsets in PCVR have an access/tinkering/faff element to them, basically the more graphically demanding the more you have to play because you can't brute force it.

Quest 3 is the best value, hard to argue otherwise

Decent? Well that is subjective personally I'd say the image quality starts to get decent at around the Pimax Crystal and BSB levels paired with a 4090, 5080 & 5090 but the costs do escalate dramatically. High quality VR is expensive that is the awkward truth.

You now have a few 4k per eye headsets but as others have said they are tough to run.

If in doubt start with a Quest 3 you can always upgrade later if you want more and sell the Q3 on

Even with a 9950X3D and a 5090FE I can't brute force everything - UEVR and REFramework VR mods for example run very poorly.

Designed for VR games tend to be better optimised - even sims, especially if you have a headset that supports eye-tracking for foveated rendering and the game supports it.

Quest 3 is definitely the best all-rounder right now. It's high enough resolution that screen door effect isn't an issue, and its not that high that you need an uber PC to get decent PCVR image quality and frame-rate in most titles.

OP has mentioned the PSVR2 in his 1st post, ive just bought 1 and a PS5 from Ebay deffo an impulse no logical thought purchase  i just wanna experience GT7 in VR tbh.

GT7 in PSVR2 is fantstic but that's pretty much the only reason fight to buy one. Microsoft Flight Sim also looks like it'll be prety good in PSVR2. However I'd still avoid PSVR2 due to the Fresnel lenses (which make it look much worse than a Quest 3 IMO) and the fact that Sony has pretty much abandoned the platform now.

Quest 3 is the way to go unless you want to spend silly money on some of the higher end PC devices. Even then they aren't the complete all round package the Quest 3 is. Steam Frame should be worth a look as well when it's eventually released as well but it's not looking like we'll see it until later in the year.

PSVR2 was one of the worst headsets I've tried. Awful mura, tiny sweet spot, bulky awkward controllers. I sold it as soon as I could.
People go on about OLED but what is the point when dark scenes have awful distracting mura?

Yeh my expectations are low, i bought it cheap used from ebay literally only for GT7 and when i'm bored with that i'll sell it on ebay, should get most of what i paid back hopefully.

Some people love the PSVR2, so you may like it.

I found my Quest Pro was far sharper, with better blacks (no mura), so it wasn't an upgrade for me.

One big massive problem with Quest 3 and other wireless headsets is input lag around 30-50ms(!). It's dead obvious when you simply wiggle the steering wheel back and forth and compare the physical with the virtual. Wifi or cable is irrelevant as wireless HMDs still compress and decompress video feed + run their wireless protocols (natively or via Virtual Desktop or Steam Link - does not matter).

Imo display port with its apporox 6ms (at 90fps) is a must, so I would recommend HP Reverb or Pimax/Varjo/BigScreenBeyond. It's not just the outright laptimes, it's the feel of the car that becomes wallowy and less sharp: https://www.reddit.com/r/iRacing/comments/1852e51/nonnative_vr_headsets_and_latency_rating_3000/

That's a good point for Sims. A wired headset is preferable if that's your main activity and you've invested in an expensive sim racing setup.

Though wireless headsets with Foveated streaming can shave at least 10ms off that. It's noticeable when I enable that on my Quest Pro in Virtual Desktop. Steam Frame is supposed to have very low input latency.

Ref the above answers, whats the best headset in terms of plug and playability? Either wired or wireless? Have a 5090FE, so i think i can power most things, looking to start playing DCS flight sim, and when its out, the new IL2 Korea game. Not hugely technically minded, so really want something thats good quality (in terms of it wont fall apart or break!), good quality (in terms of picture, i know that's subjective, and tbh covered above) but also one I don't have to download a host of other programs and apps just to make it work (obvs i dont include drivers in that!). Wireless is my preference but if the consensus is going wired saves me a lot of problems ill do that instead.

**EDIT TO ADD** what are VR glasses like for the short sighted as well? can you wear glasses under them or do they compensate? Hadnt even thought of that until i looked at Pimax website and saw they have an option for prescription lenses
