First of all thanks for reading anyway im looking to buy a 22" or a 24" tft, thing is im a little confused

ive read TN panels are a bit poor which put me off the LG 226wtq

so i looked at the Dell 2407wfp (not sure if its TN) but heard that tearing occurs in fps games and also heard this can be overcome by using vsync

lastly looked at the samsung SM245B

just wondering which if any i should get, im mainly into texture work using photoshop (so wouldnt want the wrong colour displayed when zooming in close) 3dmax etc as well as heavily into fps games.

i hear i should try to get a 1:1 to help with the above, as well as whatever the opposite to TN panels is

response time the lower the better and i understand that 3000:1 contrast ratio is better than say 800:1

dunno if im correct, but anyways would anyone be able to shout me the best tft to get bearing in mind, *** for texture work and not have any ghosting issues/tearing whilst playing fps games.

id be more than grateful
thanks in advance

fonzio

btw i just built a new rig q6600 (quad) and bfg 520mhz 8800gts as well as a real cool case so shouldnt have many problems with high res, thanks

I can only really speak for the Dell as I've never seen the Samsung.

I got one about a week back and it is absolutely ace. I love nearly everything about it, in fact the only things I don't like are the things that have now been cleared up with later revisions (I bought second hand).

The higher contrast ratio on the Samsung is due to it using Active Contrast which changes th contrast levels depending on what is being displayed at the time. It can be great, but I have heard loads of reports of it causing an overbearingly annoying flicker when going from light to a dark area, especially in games/movies. You can disable it, but the ratio would be the same as the Dell then (they use the same panel if I recall correctly).

FPS games it's brilliant, there is a tiny bit of ghosting as with every TFT but it's not very noticeable at all. After 5 minutes it's totally negligible.

As for colours, I'm really not too sure. They seem really nice and rich right now, but I don't have much to compare it to bar an ancient 17" TFT I used ages ago and the stop gap 17" CRT I just upgraded from.

I'd wait for someone's view on the Samsung and then make an informed decision based on your needs.

problem is a lot of people here will just say things like "get the dell 2407 it owns all! no drawbacks blah blah blah but it simply isn't the case.

I have a dell 2407 and a samsung 226bw sat alongside each other, both are considered there or there abouts the best of their type but theres certainly no drastically better 24" or 22" monitors than these 2.

Highlights!

The samsung 226bw or any 22" tn panel dell would be poor for "texture work using photoshop" compared to a 24" dell 2407 or a benq 24" as they are both a more advanced type of panel.

Tn panels from what i have seen are much better at handling motion in first person shooters, especially the 22" ones that have the overdrives or the viewsonic 19" 4:3. IMO you'd have to be an extremely casual first person shooter gamer to not get very frustrated with a dell 2407 or similar 24" screens. The difference on first person shooters between my dell 2407 and my samsung 22" 226bw is staggering, however it copes with all other types of games very well.

manufacturer's contrast ratio's are fictional tbh! i would pay very little attention to them.

In short, no one monitor currently exists that is exceptionally good at photo editing AND first person shooters.

Dell 2407 =

photo editing , wow factor , viewing angles, any other games other than first person shooters.

Samsung 226bw + LG 226wtq =

Currently the best available by a mile along with the viewsonic VX922 for gaming but still no substitute for a good crt, depends how seriously you play tbh but i'd say 95% of people + would be extremely happy with one of these. Tn panel may not be suitable for photowork and definitely not as capable as the dell 2407.

You may need to do what i did and get both, best of both worlds :D

Hope this helps, its definitely very accurate.

TBH, I can't see ghosting at all on any of the newer LCDs. I think a lot depends on the person.

yea thats it really, its unfair to just tell anyone that itll be perfect though thats why i try to say it 'may' be a problem. No doubt the 2407 is a top screen in a lot of ways.

Got BenQ 241 W this week....and its going bak. The ghosting was giving me motion sickness...first couple of tries playing 2142! Honest. Great panel....but carp for really high paced movement.

My findings exactly. On the motion front i suspect the benq 24" and the dell 24" are almost identical. Just depends if your the sort of person who will notice it.

Surely the NEC 20wgx2 could lay claim to managing both of those things. Admittedly it is rather expensive though (£340 from OCUK for example).

EDIT!

Would be interested to have a go on one of these and see how they are. Maybe a little on the small side at approx 20" though? :(
