Looking for a 5.1/7.1 surround sound system with optical in

Used logitech z5500 connected via 3x 3.5mm is the best option if you can get one for £100. Any reason why you really want to use optical?

If you want optical input, either a used set of Z5500's, or a cheap home cinema package from Samsung, etc.

There is very little choice really for any kind of surround speakers with optical input, for around £100.

the media center i have chosen only has optical out its a zotac zbox ID34 one with blue ray, i intend to have windows 7 with power DVD and XBMC on there and customise the shell so it just loads XBMC like the XBMC Live version...

also would a AV revicer help me ie connect all HDMI cables to it and then it to a surround and TV ?

Yes that's how an AV receiver works. You plug all your inputs (dvd players, media centre etc.) and all your outputs: hdmi to TV and speakers + sub into it.

You won't get a decent AV receiver and speakers for £100 though.
