Looking for a 970 advice needed.

The GALAX is cheaper and can be easily overclocked to more than 1450MHz due to the fantastic cooler which is probably better than the EVGA. The EVGA cards don't have a backplate. The two cards you selected are essentially the same card but one is clocked higher than the other so not worth paying more for a bit of clock speed. Any GTX 970 with a decent cooler will clock higher anyway.

The EVGAs were supposed to be getting a new backplate addition, and maybe fixing that misaligned cooler pipe issue? There was an announcement thread in here somewhere I'm sure.

I am looking into the same thing (also considering second hand GTX780Ti at about the same price or less, but probably not). I've narrowed mine down the the Asus Strix or that Galax mentioned.

My first link includes a backplate. And found this http://forums.evga.com/EVGA-GTX-970-ACX-20-quality-concerns-m2219546.aspx Scroll down and note a post by a Evga Techie.

I've had the KFA2/Galax "Infinity Black Edition" for a few weeks now and finding it a great card. Mine boosts to 1420 at stock settings and I've nudged it to 1500 easily with little noticable heat raising.

It does run cool as well, cooler than I thought, rarely crossing 60 degrees if ever gaming.

Definitely would recommend it.

I think that I am moving away fro Evga the more research I do. But have noted the suggestions given here.
Have not got the cash yet so plenty of time before I commit myself.

Ah that rev2 EVGA (on deal of the day too!) suggests they've fixed at least some of the problems. I'm still inclined to wait on reviews of it or just go with Asus/Galax, myself.

The Gigabyte also has some reasonable reviews.

Gigabyte and MSI both seem like a safe bet too, yeah. I'm only thinking Asus as I've had happy times with their kit in the past, and Galax because the whine guarantee is nice and the clock speeds look speedy.

I will throw my hat in the ring and say the Gigabyte G1, mine arrived today - great card,
Feels really well built as well. :)

My recommendation would be the OCUK reference model which is currently at £300 pre-order.

Stunning card.

I was asking this in the thread concerned but I'm not sure I got an answer really - what would you say recommends the OCUK ref model over the likes of the Galax or Asus for example? Is it just the look of it being all "true Nvidia" or are there some practical benefits?

Cheers.

Yes, it is guaranteed to run without coil whine and will dump hot air outside of the case, which is definitely what you want in an air restricted case or with SLI. It will overclock very well, up to and beyond in some cases what the non-ref cards can do, and has better build quality than pretty much every other card out there (with a solid 3-year warranty to back that up). I also think there's an excellent chance these cards will hold their value better.

Hi, please be also aware that we have just launched new 970 models with overworked and more power phases, 6+8 Pin power input and a baseplate that do touch the power management and RAM for cooling. The card do also come with an increased power target and improved cooler! You can find more information about the new SSC model at the following link, the equal FTW+ model with backplate preinstalled with get available in EU in about 2-3 Weeks.
