Bit of a "specialized needs" request this one.

I am looking for a program that will load up a file, and re-save it using the smallest file size...

For example, it will load up PICTURE.JPG and see if it is smaller if saved as a JPG, GIF or PNG, and whichever is the smallest, it will keep that and save it.

The dimensions of the picture I will not be adjusting

I have tried a few thumbnail utilties but these dont do what I am asking.

Actually, its not me who wants it, it a friend.

I recommend to use simple MSPaint and see for himself, but its got to the stage where we are talking of hundreds of pictures.

PSCS2

Yeah, like I have half a billion quid to throw at some software just to do this?

Seriously though...

Irfanview is doing a nice job, as expected...

We are to be honest, not fully happy

What it is doing, which is spot-on, is allowing us to batch convert a load of mixed type images, and outputting them to our selected type, eg JPG, and what is happening, is that every one of the JPG files are smaller than the original, which has helped somewhat.

The thing is, that I have output them to PNG, JPG and GIF, and on some files, the GIF is smaller, and on others the JPG is smaller, and others the PNG.

Originally, this is what I wanted... to keep the original as close to 100% visually, and physically size-wise, but for the program to check if it will make the image smaller as one file type than the other, then for it to save it as the smallest one... Can you see?

Now, the thing is, that because we have seen a small improvement in the size, it does look like we are going to go on JPG, for everything ( Still images that is )

Besides, I think its more sensible to stick to one format and only use another when necessary, but there you go! - Some people just are not happy even if they dont really have a clue as to what they really want?

Sorry mate.
I wasnt biting your head off, its more of a snap at CS2 for being so expensive.

I have toyed with CS2, and its very powerful, and I have no doubt it will do exactly what we are after, but I dont think in this case, its a good option, considerign what we need and how much it costs.

I think that its all sorted now. I think irfanview is doing as I said, smaller JPG so at least he is seing some file-size-shrinkage, so its kept him quiet anyway.

Cheers dude.
