Hey guys,

I tend to lurk rather than post, but I've learned that this is one of the best places to ask when it comes to advice for hardware and the like. As the title states, I'm looking for a solid HSF for under £30 for my rig. I'm running an 3570K on a Gigabyte Z77 D3H, with 8 gigs of G-Skill Ripjaws. The heatspreaders on the RAM stick up a little but aren't too bad. Has to fit inside an Antec 300.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help!

Agree with setter.

True Spirit 120 is good but True Spirit 120M is lower and offset for even better Ram clearance

Tbh, i think either would be ok for ram clearance. I have one of the old wider 6 pipe ultra 120 models. Had no problems with it along with 12gb of reaper ram in an x58 build. The reapers were probably the tallest ram kits ever made.

Agree.
Centerline of CPU to front of fan on TS120 is about 52mm. Just measured on my X58A-UD5 (6x RAM mounts) and have 53mm centerline to edge of RAM mount.. and RAM is at least 1-2mm farther (always at least 2mm between RAM). Z77 D3H is 4x RAM so another 10-15mm of clearance. Think Ultra is 63mm thick vs TS's 53mm

This is my old x58 setup with the ultra 120. As youll see, i put the ram in the wrong slots when building. But it let me know that 12gb of reapers would fit. There was about 3-4mm clearance to the fan.

As you can see, the reapers are pretty tall and thick heatspreaders.

Indeed. Very nice looking bit of kit! What CPU do you have under the Ultra?

My X58A-UD5 slots set in closer to CPU socket.

In those shots above, the cpu was an i7 920 @4.2ghz, lapped TRUE black. All that kit has since been sold. But i have another rig, asus p6t x58de with an i7 930, (back at stock for now). It's cooled by a silver non lapped TRUE 120. Gonna clock it up once i get some better fans for the cooler, ive ordered 2 akasa piranhas, ill see how they fair on my k2 in the rig in sig first though.

I have one of the orginal 4 pipe Ultras setting on the shelf. Got it for £5 so couldn't not get it. :D Think it's same/very similar to you TRUE 120.

I need to learn how to overclock. Have a 920 @ 3.55GHz running very cool. And my 980 runs cold! Like 43-48c max all cores 100% under TC14PE w/ TY-143 fans @ 970rpm max. I can unplug all fans in system and encode for hours and never go about 70c.. even when ambient was 26c last summer. :D

Now I have SA SB-E Extreme to play with.. and it should cool just as good as TC14PE does.

I don't have any experience with coolers under £30 but I've heard many good things about this:

I have a Zalman CNPS9900MAX which keeps my stock 3770K at about 31*C idle and about 60*C load:

Alternatively you could consider one of these for £35, if you had some spare fans lying around.
