as title really, am looking for a calendar that will pop with an alert for events etc.. anyone know of one at all?? not really up for the desktopx widget type thing though..

I use mindful and I like it. It's small too. You enter the events with a lead-up period and when you enter that time period mindful displays. You can set it to say remember birthdays etc on an annual basis, and you can also set it to show its self at various time periods eg every 5 months etc. I use the date reminder for everything from birthdays, reminders for house insurance. And, I set it to remind me every six weeks to record gas and electric readings. It will also allow you to enter details which automatically calculate events, ie....Heading: "[1805] Aniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar", date 21st October, dispalys this year as "203rd Aniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar". Your entered events appear in list form as if they were entered on a mill board etc. If it wasn't free I'd pay for it!
