Looking for a great strategy/operational wargame

I've been searching around, and just can't find anything that hits the button.

Currently have:

* Most of the Total War series - played to death
* Europa Universalis 3. Couldn't get into it
* Civ 4. Couldn't get into it
* Panzer General 2 - a classic - played to death
* Hearts of Iron 2 - Doomsday - another classic - played to death
* Commander - Europe at War - very good but poor replayablility

I'm probably looking for the impossible: great AI, real depth, attractive maps, great user interface, a good mix of long and short campaigns, preferably historical (ie non fantasy/sci-fi), great community/mod opportunities. Cost no option.

So far the shortlist is very short and there is nothing compelling:

* Ageod's American Civil War.

Good reviews, but I'm put off by the graphics - a bit to busy for my tastes (I know, I'm fussy).

* Ageod's Napoleon's Campaigns.

Reasonable reviews, but a less busy looking map.

* Advanced Tactics

Highly acclaimed. But those graphics, and that busy UI are just so last century...yech.

I'm edging towards Napoleon's Campaigns, anyone care to convince me one way or the other?

I love Hearts of Iron 2 - Doomsday, awesome game. have you tried any mods for it? can really make a big difference and makes it feel like a different game.

I agree, HOI2 DD is probably the best strategy wargame to date IMO. The depth of the game makes CAEW seem like draughts. I played the Total Reality Mod on HOI2, but not DD. I may have to resort to that out of desperation :).

Seeing as some of us here share a passion for obscure WW2 strategy games from Paradox, I might suggest Victoria: Revolutions. It has serious depth, though perhaps not as tightly focused on grand strategic warfare as you might like. And of course, like all Paradox games it will need modding to bring out its potential! :D

Other than that, all I can suggest is waiting (im)patiently for Empire: Total War. Just like me. :(

World in Conflict? Luckily never happened but the units are real.

It might not fit the OP's request, but that game has been tempting me a bit of late I must admit. I even re-downloaded the demo last night. Very tempting, if I can find it cheap. ;)

Looks alright, but fairly mediocre reviews...

Most definitely. Totally looking forward to the sea battles. That said, the battle engine seems to me to be getting a little tired (I came to loathe sieges), hope they give it a good makeover.

Being laid up in bed with a bad back has given me the opportunity to research options endlessly (thanks to one of the 3 greatest inventions - the wheel, stockings and wireless internet ;)).

I have decided that there is nothing out there at the moment that hits the mark. I will load up the Total Reality version of HOI DD, give that a go, after which, I will revisit EU3 once again, this time trying not to immediately barge into the nearest neighbour for a slugfest and findling myself crapped on by it and all it's allies (happens everytime :)).
