Need one for uni, to replace my ancient AthlonXP 3200 /19" CRT:

Movies
Occasional Gaming (average settings smoothly)
Music
Uni work
Widescreen would be nice.

Budget...

£700 max!

Something I've seen so far that fits under £650 is...

TOSHIBA P300-156
Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 processor
(1.83 GHz, 667 Mhz, 2MB Cache)
Vista Premium
3GB memory
250GB Hard Drive
ATI Radeon 3470 256MB graphics card
Integrated Harmon Kardon speakers

Looks pretty nice too.

Any recommendations or suggestions?

I recently bought a Dell Vostro 1700 for £564 delivered

17 inch Screen
Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 processor
3GB Ram
320GB Hard Drive (2x160GB)
Nvidia 8600 GT Graphics
Vista Home Premium

Good spec, I just found another possible contender though.

ACER ASP 7720G.004
17" Widescreen
Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2 GHz)
2GB Ram
500GB Sata.
Vista Ultimate
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS 256mb
Integ Webcam, TV Tuner and Remote

£599

Mainly for watching films, I fancy having a decent size screen. It would b replacing my 19" monitor / tower and crappy broken laptop.

Want something that I can take to uni, and also use as a media centre type thing.

I had a look at those laptop rucksack things in the ocuk shop, they look good enough for the job.

Yeah I noticed it didnt have media centre, apparently the DVD drive wasnt compatible with the Vista Ultimate operating system, bit odd...

The 1710 is a redesigned version of the 1700 I think, slightly different look. I'll see where the nearest one is.

When you say 'take to uni' do you mean to your flat/halls or to lectures? 17" laptops are quite cumbersome and usually heavy too.

Yeah take to lectures now and then.

To b honest the weight issue doesn't bother me, I'd go for the 15.4 Vostro 1510 if it wouldn't give me a compatibility issue with the graphics card. Apparently it cant take the 8600M GT because it's not compatable with the power supply?
