I have no idea how to compare desktop to laptop so looking for some help finding something at least as good as my current desktop but hopefully a bit more powerful/future proof for the next few years. I'm hoping this can be done on a max budget around £1000.

My aging desktop rig:

Intel i5-4670k 3.4GHz
8GB ram
Nvidia GTX 760
120GB SSD

Laptop will be used for general stuff with a bit of casual gaming. I don't need to play the latest games on the very absolute highest settings but obviously the more power the better.

Most of the time it'll be hooked up to a monitor so screen size isn't too important.

Decided there's not much I like the look of for under £1k so bumping my budget up to £1500. The MSIs look nice and have good specs. So currently favouring those.

I'm wondering if it's worth paying the extra for the 980 over a 970...

There's an MSI for £1499 but the equivalent Asus with the 980 is over my budget. But the Asus does seem to get the better reviews. Hmmm.

I've been wondering the same. You can get the msi gt72 for under £1400 that has a 980m. Tbh at this price point you wont be disappointed with anything you have. I remember reading some poor reviews of my alienware 14 after I bought it and I found it an absolutely great piece of kit.
