Looking For A Less Stressful Car

That's very different from my experience. I had a 5.0 V10 TDI for about 9 months and it was superb, if a touch gigantic.

It's basically the same car as a Bentley Continental or A8 and it was designed from the ground up as a Rolls-Royce beater. When I had it serviced in Norwich, the dealer sent a young woman to pick it up and drop me off another one. They weren't allowed to give me anything other than another Phaeton and when it came back it was always very nicely valeted. And they charged the same for servicing it as any other VW.

I think the reason they didn't sell is why the heck would you spend £70-£90K on a VW? You just wouldn't.

Trouble is despite its underpinnings its nothing like a Bentley or an A8, it was just an unpopular flop.

The only bits of the Phaeton that really are just like the Bentley from a drivers point of view is the computer and nav system, the pedals, centre armrest and I believe the switchgear iirc.

Just a completely different driving experience though isnt it. If those things were built as Rolls Royce beaters they were on drugs, i cant see how they stole 1 single sale from them.

Yes, and the engine, gearbox and all the other oily bits are identical between the W12 Phaeton and the W12 Bentley. Yet one is a triumph and the other is a flop. It's just badge snobbery (and the fact that most folks couldn't tell a Phaeton from a Passat unless they were parked next to each other). And it doesn't change my original point that the Phaeton itself should be a well made highly reliable car, which is why I found Will Gill's comments so odd.

I know the drive train is the same, but I did say from a drivers point if view, and the engine really isn't the same from that pov ...the Phaeton lacks the turbos and is about 200bhp down on the Bentley, the gearbox is academic in this instance, it's a smooth auto that does exactly what it's supposed to do, i.e. you don't notice it. The Phaeton is more comfortable actually.

The Phaeton is a splendid car, I like them ...but I wouldn't buy one because I can get cars I would rather have at any price point they come in at.

I didnt say it wasnt a well made car, i said it was a flop and not even on the same page as a Bentley performance, driving or any other way wise.

Without reading all of the posts in detail;

The best car for £12000 is the recently achievable (at this budget) BMW E65 750i Facelift, 2005 model.

The 4.8 V8 engine and gearbox are fantastic, the interior feels much more modern than the W220. All in all they are great cars, and just what you are after. They should also be a good deal cheaper to run than one. Absolutely the bargains of the used market.

Hard to argue with that Jez, although I'd buy an XJR for that tbh ...when I think that I got my Jag for almost half that though, it makes me smile a lot though ...what a bargain.
