Hey guys

So I'm looking for a NAS, to basically store all my media ect and stream to the TV and phones/tablets as well as play music to my Sound unit in the kitchen.

I've found a few, however I wont mention the competitors just looking for insight into these listed.

Netgear ReadyNAS 102 with 2x 3TB WD Red £290.93 Inc VAT

2 bay Synology NAS DS213air with 2x 3TB WD RED £350.28 Inc VAT

thoughts?

Which one is better for the money and reliable ?

Cheers

Synology is a wonderful system, DSM is superb, and the add-in packages make the whole system a fantastic addition to any SOHO network.

I'd opt for the Synology every time.

Synology used to be great but not any more.
I would either go for a HP Microserver Gen 8 and install XPEnology. Or if you have the cash go for a Qnap 451 which has HDMI output and Kodi installed.

Synology not so great, then you go and recommend the hacked unsupported version of the same software?

Well done.

Well I've just replaced my Synology 2 bay NAS for a HP micro server and I'm using XPenology and DSM installed, its a million times better than the Synology NAS box I had.

I'm selling my Synology DS210J at the moment on MM.

I know all about XPEnology, I run a modified Lacie Ethernet Disk (the 1U version) with a new ITX board, and 4 2TB disks, but I also own a 212J, and for ease of use, physical space, and continued support, I'd push the genuine product to someone looking to buy an off the shelf NAS.

XPEnology certainly has it's place, but I'm not sure that place is with someone who was considering any product made by Netgear.

210J is a 5 year old product.

"Over a Gigabit Ethernet connection, file transfers on the DS210J were quick. With two disks in RAID 0, large files were read at 36.6MB/s and written at 29.7MB/s"

^These speeds are very poor, despite what the review says. They were bad back then and they're bad now.

NAS devices from this era were terrible compared to a home built server.

They really don't compare with the newer models. Different league.

The specs on the earlier models were a joke for the software that they run on them now.

cheers for the feedback guys!

hopefully I'll make the right decision.
Budget is around £320 for NAS and HDD

I have a synology box (212 i belive its a black box supposed to be better than white ones) and a N54L the n54L wipes the floor in terms of transfer speeds. However cannot comment on newer synology kit. However their support is dreadfull. 5 weeks to answer a ticket to even then not help me. The uk support was good when it was about. Now you cant call them DO NOT buy a synology thinking your going to get a good level of support. However to be fair the product has never let me down, apart from an update they did not supporting my i.p cameras. Then four updates later it did. I had to use another system for a while to say it was frustrating is an understatement.

You will want something that can transcode hd stuff for you, or something you can install plex on.
My smart TV is not reliable at transcoding stuff off a network share and i needed to put servio on the home pc to do that task.
I'll be opting for the synology 214play probably at some stage this week.

Tough decision to make....

I learnt the hard way. I bought a 2 bay synology and was happy until the HDs was filling up fast.
Went and got a N54l(which is awesome) 4 bay and was very happy running XPEnology.

Then I wanted Kodi on my not so smart TV, so I looked long and hard and got the TS-451.

I would have saved a bunch of cash getting what I needed in the first place :)
