I've been looking for a new cordless drill for a while and my existing one finally gave up the ghost over the weekend! (it wasn't helped by the fact that a chair fell over and smashed the base of it and the charger too!)

Anyway, I've been looking at the Makita range and wondered what people's thoughts were on the following:

Makita BHP453SH

or

Makita HP457DWEX2

The Screwfix one appears to be the better drill (?) according to what I've read but only has one battery whereas the B&Q model has 2 batteries but they aren't compatible with other Makita products (not particularly an issue for me!)

I'm leaning towards the B&Q model as I can get my dad to buy it on Wednesday and get B&Q's 10% discount for old fogies! :D

Given that it's only going to be for basic DIY use at home, does anything think it's worth me going for the Screwfix model or have any other suggestions that I should be considering?

Thanks....

Makita BHP453SH very good drill, can't fault it, got one to replace a elderly Bosch 18v drill, I have recommended the Makita to many on the forum.

I can mange find with just the one battery, lasts all day, it only takes 30 minutes to charge, which just long enough to have a coffee when recharging.

There is also the new Makita DHP453SY, has a fan cooled motor, not many reviews on it.

DeWalt DCD776C2 looks a good drill, I never got on with the earlier Dewalt drills, they always felt wrong when using them, that's why I used Makita.

I'm in screwfix tonight, will have a nosy & compare with my Makita.

Thanks for the pointers guys!

To be honest I'm leaning towards the B&Q-specific Makita model above, simply down to the fact it has 2 batteries and I can pick it up for £90! (plus I might also get the Makita 101pc Accessory Kit)

I like the look of the Dewalt but it's an extra £30 on top and I'm not sure I'd notice where the extra cash went!

Other than the fact the batteries aren't the standard fitting Makita ones, are there any other reasons not to go for this one?? (quality-wise or feature-wise I mean)

Thanks again...

No.

But, I doubt you use the second battery much.

Yeah, I can't imagine it will get much use either but I guess it's there if I need it! It basically boils down to cost so the B&Q-specific one looks to be the business!

Anyone got any opinions on the accessory kit? No idea what I'm looking for to be honest but my existing drill bits are all over the place and looking a bit rusty so I might as well get something!

The Makita 453 is a really nice drill. When I tried combi drills out in store at Screwfix, I far preferred the balance and grip of the newer DeWalts, I ended up with the DCD785.

I'd say you picked wisely as that drill now costs £250! It was a bargain when it was £150.

I got a 18V LI - ion Makita a few years ago - I also got the torch so when the drill aint in use (99% of the time) using the torch helps cycle the batteries.
