Looking for a new CPU...Advice needed.

I was considering buying a Mac Pro because I want an ultra fast computer and thought doing video editing, etc, I could benefit from the 8 cores that a Mac Pro could provide.

However, I think for the time being I would just like to upgrade my PC and buy a Mac Pro in 12 months time.

So...I have a PC with 4GB Ram, an Asus P35 motherboard and a 2.4GHz E6600 CPU (running at 3GHz).

What would be my best upgrade path? Obviously, a quad core would be preferred, but what processor will give me the best performance increase?

I am also looking to try Windows XP 64bit so I can get some extra RAM, but I'm not sure if that will make any difference to the CPU I choose.
