Hi guys, new to the forum (though I joined back in Nov) I currently have a EVGA HD5850 1Gb.
I've just upgraded the rest of my comp with an FX-8320, 8Gb Corsair Vengeance 2133, Asus M5A97 Evo R2.0 and 750W PSU.
Now, it runs games reasonably well: AC4 stutters a little in certain areas, most others have a little slowdown too, but not totally unplayable for me.
The main thing is that when I use my PC as a media center outputting 1080p to my TV, it also stutters randomly, ie. goes from smooth to jerky then back to smooth again.

Ideally, I want something with 2Gb+ that won't break the band and would be good enough an upgrade to justify the cash.

Any help would be appreciated, hopefully I've put this in the right place!

The r9 280. Best bang for buck in the price range. And it's got 3gb VRAM so it should last you a while.

280's seem to be good little power houses! am I correct in saying that they are 7950 - "and a bit" and the X is the 7970?

I was really tempted by one but managed to get a 7950 at a good price, so going that route once my old cards sell :)

Both good cards, remember you can SLI Crossfire a 280 with your 7950 :)

keep forgetting that too, nice that they are so closely linked to accept xfire happily

Sorry to hijack the thread a little Maloney, been in the same boat as you for WEEKS up until now lol

Fixed that :)

As for the card, I would look at a 280 also. As for the media stutter, I would suspect that is due to something else other than the 5850, as I used a 8800GT to media stream and it worked with no issues, except when I had it coneecting wirelessly (wi-fi) and then I would get the stutter occasionally.

Goddamnit, second time I have said that lol

That's no problem haha.

Hmm, seemed odd to me also, but when I dropped the res to 720p, there was no stutter at all. Maybe it's a codex issue, I'll admit, I didn't get any codexes when I installed windows on my new build.

Here is a few 280's to choose from , they all have the same warranty and dont think theres much to choose from in terms of manufacturers.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Powercolor Radeon R9 280 TurboDUO 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £149.99
1 x VTX3D Radeon R9 280 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £149.99
1 x XFX Radeon R9 280 DD Edition 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (R9-280A-TDFD) £149.99
.

Thanks, mickyflinn, I'll check those out. They come with free games too, which adds value :)
Think I'll be getting me a 280 when I get the cash then!
Cheers, guys.

Tbh there's no alternative really at that price point, the 270X is only ~£20 cheaper and has worse performance, the nvidia 760 is on par but a bit more expensive &only has 2gb VRAM
