My old lid has seen better days and has never been great at speed. The wind noise is really bad.

Ideally I'm looking at the cheaper end of the scale which copes well with wind noise and doesn't look terrible.

Spec me!

Out of all the lids i've tried - Arai comes out on top in wind noise.

However Shark/Suomy and one other brand do not fit so they may be better. I fit Arai/HJC perfectly however.

Whatever fits you best - and a pair of earplugs. No point buying the worlds queitest lid if it gives you a headache after 10 minutes or will come off in a spill. Everyones head shape is different so you really do need to try them on to find what suits you best.

When you try it on, try it on for 1/2 hour if you can, go and look at the bikes / other kit / read see if it gives you a headache

How much have you got to spend?
What size?

Around £200 size 57/58.

I've been riding since 1993 and had Arai, Shark and Shoei lids along with some cheaper Lasers and AGV. I've had my last Laser lid for the last 5 years as I've not ridden much, hence why I'm asking the question about what's quiet. I always wear ear plugs on longer rides but too and from work is only 10 minutes so I don't bother.

Thats fine but IMHO you're doing this the wrong way round, spend some time in shops finding some lids that actually fit you properly then if you have found more than one (I never do) narrow down your choice on other factors like noise. There's no point on asking people to "spec me" if 9 times out of 10 their suggested lids aren't going to fit you properly, and you can't even go on what used to fit you as manufacturers often change their shell shapes / sizes so that they no longer fit the same head shape. Arai's used to fit me perfectly and Shoei's gave me a headache then neither fitted properly so I moved to Shark now it's Shoei that fits best.....

In another thread I made my mind up on AGV's went to look at some but they must be for pea heads as the bottom of the chin piece on the XXL cam to my bottom lip so was no use, eventually just tried loads on till I come back to the current model of Shoei I had

Aye forgot to add - make sure it fits right. Otherwise it could kill you if you have an accident. No good being quiet if you die from it. Life will be a lot quieter then...

Have you noticed how quite a lot of the cheap thermoplastic helmets have a really good SHARP score, and plenty of very expensive ones don't?

My instructor told me that the SHARP score was a total load of ****, although he did say this was his opinion and not the opinion of the test centre.. But he was a traffic cop for over 15 years so I'm inclined to listen to him!

Take it as a guide, I can see why there is a £175 Harley davidson lid @ 1* with a load of other makes I never heard of, and I can see why decent makes are 5*, no real science

Yes, but there is an equal spread throughout - what are you saying? Not following.

What I'm saying is that traditionally it was thought the more you paid the better protection you were likely to get, and that thermoplastic helmets were generally crap compared to composite ones.
