Looking for a new keyboard

I'm looking for a new keyboard, I've never used a mechanical keyboard so I'm not sure I want one, I usually go for low profile keys, at the minute I'm using a Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000, the only reason I want a new one is the lack of backlight.

Is there a keyboard out there like the Comfort Curve 2000 but with backlighting like the Razer Blackwidow Chroma? I very nearly bought a Blackwidow Chroma but it's a lot of money to spend on something I might not like! I did try going to a local pc shop to have a play with the display models but they don't have the gaming keyboards out to play with anymore, nor did they have a Chroma, they did have a Blackwidow Expert (I'm assuming this has the same switches?) which has a window in the box so you can press some of the buttons, but that wasn't enough to go and buy the Chroma!

I'd try the Razer Deathstalker Expert if you could change the colour (without pulling it apart and changing all the L.E.D.s!).

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Rob

I forked out a while ago on an expensive rubber domed keyboard.
Then I bought a mechanical keyboard for work, a week later I bought a mechanical keyboard for home.
There's no way I'd go back... BUT I would research and possibly buy a keyboard you can send back if you don't like it rather than spending a bunch of cash one something you don't like.
When it's something you use every day, you don't want one you don't like!!

On that note I own:

Max Keyboard Nighthawk X9 (Cherry Red)
Ducky Shine 3 YotS Edition (Cherry Red)
MadCatz Strike7
Logitech G19
Razer Orbweaver Stealth (Cherry Brown)

I use these on all of my mechanical keyboards: Noise dampening O-Ring

Some companies will sell a PCB with one of each of the MX cherry switches on it... if you know where to look.

I think I'll go for the Blackwidow Chroma, the only thing stopping me was the fact it's mechanical and I've never really tried mechanical, the nearest I got was a couple of years ago I had a quick play of some display models while I was passing!

Most people that make the switch to mechanical seem to love it, if the worst comes to the worst I could always sell it on and get back a good chunk of my money, but I'm sure I'll love it! I've spent the last few days researching various options but keep coming back to the Blackwidow Chroma.

Plus, I've just had a phone call from my boss asking me to do a few hours tomorrow (I've got a week off), they always make overtime worth my while so that'll go towards it as well!

Thanks for your input.

I bought a Blackwidow Chroma, it's definitely the noisiest keyboard I've ever owned! It's not something that's going to put me off though, I have an O-ring set that had a few about the right size for the keys so I tried them on the wasd keys, they stopped the thud at the bottom so I've ordered a set of clear ones.

I keep hitting caps lock while typing, something I'll get used to, not a deal breaker! Not really a fan of white behind the keys reflecting the light, when the O-rings come I think I'll pull all the keys together and see if I can cover it all up with matt black vinyl, I have access to a vinyl cutter, making a keyboard mask shouldn't be too difficult, I might try it on a smaller section first, like the macro keys, to make sure it has the desired effect.

Other than that, it's a great keyboard IMO, I fired up BF3 to get back into FPS, I've been away from gaming for a while, only recently got my computer set up on a desk again since I moved into my new house, I've had it plugged into my TV and used a logitech k400r for netflix and browsing for over a year! Once I'm back up to speed I'll invest in some newer games, already pre-ordered and pre-loaded GTA V!
