Hey all,

I am looking to get a new monitor for my PC. I've been out of the game for a little while and since I last bought a monitor, new features such as; g-sync, free sync, 144hz, 1080p/1440p/4K have come about...

I currently have my PC attached to a 37" 1080P TV, and I will continue to use the PC with the TV for films and couch gaming - but I'm looking to get a monitor for my desk for mouse/keyboard gaming and work. I also currently have a Nvidea GTX 970, however I will be upgrading when the new GPUs are released later this year (I am still undecided on whether to get an NVidea or an AMD).

So first, I have a few questions:

1. 1080P vs 1440P: I've been gaming in 1080P and it's great, but with the new monitor I'm looking into 1440P... Is it worth the upgrade? I am perfectly happy with 1080P, what reasons do I have to start gaming in 1440P? And how does it effect working or browsing the web?

2. 144Hz: I've been hearing a lot about 144Hz and how it improves gaming - any comments on that? Will it effect watching films?

3. DisplayPort?: I've read that people use DisplayPort now as an adapter instead of HDMI? What is this mysterious port and should I be looking for support on my future monitor?

4. GSync vs Freesync: These are both very new to me... Are they important to have? Since I'm not sure what GPU I'm getting this year, I'm hesitant to pick one at this stage...

And finally... If you have any recommendations (around 24"), please let me know :D

Thanks,
Marky

1) more pixels = more detail in gaming, less jaggies, more screen space on desktop / web pages.

2) 144Hz = smoother gameplay, less motion blur, but often comes at the cost of worse colours (pixels need to be able to change colour fast). no effect on movies, blu rays are output at 24Hz. especially useful for fast moving / competitive games. less useful for "cinematic" games.

3) Display port is required for 4k 60Hz. It's just a cable type. You can do 1080p 144Hz with DVI-D, so it's not a must have.

4) Gsync / Freesync sync the monitor framerate to what ur GPU can output. Need a matching nvidia / AMD card. Will reduce stutter when running at <60 or <144 fps.

24" = get 1080p, prolly 144Hz for under £200.

27" = get 1440p, 60Hz unless u got a high end GPU. probably in the £200-250 range.

colour quality may not be as good as your TV. but motion blur will be much less noticeable and input lag should be less.
