Hey,

I'm on the hunt for a new gaming monitor, and would like some guidance! I've had my Samsung P2450H 24" lcd for a few years now and looking to change it.

I play mostly FPS and MOBA, with the odd RPG. Budget wise I'm looking for 200ish. Size wise, 24 inch is sufficient but open to suggestions (not smaller).

Thanks in advance!

AOC do two 24" 144Hz monitors for under £200.

The more expensive one is what I have and Im happy with it as a gaming screen, the fully adjustable stand is also a bonus.

Bit of advice required, was going to take the plunge with the above, but was wondering if now was a good time to buy a monitor? I heard something about announcements round the corner that might drive prices down?

The price cuts are usually for previously new products, which have technology or features that are now becoming more common. G-sync monitors will probably be an example of this, once the Freesync/Adaptive Sync becomes available.

In the £200 price range, this usually doesn't hold true. In this price range, general technological advancements (improved manufacturing process with better yields) and periodic obsolescence (manufacturer releases a new line of monitors to replace the old ones) matter more, and the changes are very gradual. In the £200 price range, if you wait 3 months, you can usually expect something like £10-20 price drop. And only to a certain point; if you wait another 3 months, the latter drop might only be £5-15. Next cycle might not change the price at all. In other words, usually not worth the wait.

There are indeed 120Hz IPS monitors rumoured to be released/developed. But from what I've gathered, this could take anything from few months to two years. And while this will indeed affect the £400+ TN 144Hz monitors, it will probably have little to no effect on the £200 range.

Of course, if you're not in a hurry and are willing to save your money for an increased budget, then the situation might look a little different in 6 months. For £300-400 the selection opens up dramatically.

Thanks for weighing in, pretty much exactly the clarification I was looking for. I guess with this budget range things aren't going to change too drastically, so going to go for the AOC.

Thanks!

I am looking at buying the LG as well, it looks nice and the specs look good.

No reviews and i dont know if the LG calibrator works with it

I think the AOC look cheap!

Ye I literally cant find any reviews of the LG, assuming it's because it's not been out long. I quite like the look of the AOC!

I really like the look of the LG 24GM77 too, and the one German review I was able to find made it sound pretty good, but I wasn't able to follow all of it very well in the broken Chrome translation.

And then I see the 24GM77-B around too, but not idea what, if anything, is the difference.

Paging PCM2... what's keeping you? ;)

The AOC has a pivot in the stand, but I would stake LG as a more reliable brand. LG also has a flicker-free backlight. Also, there are some interesting features that might be beneficial. Or, they could also be a total waste of time.

Here's a quote from gizmodo with regards to the Dynamic Action Sync:

"The new LG 24GM77 gaming monitor will feature a fast 144Hz refresh rate for a smoother visual experience in fast-paced games, and a gaming mode that LG dubs Dynamic Action Sync. Dynamic Action Sync promises to cut input lag enabling a smoother experience in fast-paced scenes.

It’s interesting that LG has decided to invent its own smoothing mode and not go with NVIDIA’s G-Sync technology designed to eliminate screen tearing for gamers. Mind you, G-Sync is good for smoothing out 60Hz-100Hz monitors. LG’s new monitor supports a 144Hz refresh rate, which means that tearing and jagged graphics aren’t going to be a massive issue. We’ll have to see what the new Dynamic Action Sync is like when we go eyes-on in September."

In summary:
With the current knowledge, I would definitely get the LG instead of the AOC.

Thanks for the input, I guess the thing that's holding me back from the LG is that, it's new, no reviews, no one seems to really have any experience with it, so it's abit of a risk! At least with the AOC there is lots of feedback around it.

@OCUK can you do a review on the LG please?

this is the tanslated conclusion from a german site

Conclusion

The LG 24GM77-B can be called a real surprise. So far, LG was known as a manufacturer of good monitors for many missions, but LG comes with this monitor directly into the heart of the gaming industry and with great success. Want to score in disciplines where other manufacturers with uncompromising performance at the expense of picture quality, it creates LG to combine both areas. Reduce input lag and a very high reaction rate is combined with a stable image quality that is unprecedented in fast gaming monitors.

LG promises much and can score in as many disciplines as well as comfort and workmanship are very important for this monitor. Connections, additional functions such as Pivot and many settings in the OSD offer the user full control over all properties of the gaming device. Whether for gaming, movies or work, even if it has to be fast, LG can delight, because who wants to adapt quickly everything can about the big Quick access buttons select settings that were set either by the manufacturer or by the user.

In addition, a simple yet modern design. The unit also features very low power consumption, although the subjective impression could negotiate with the outstanding brightness of something else. Overall, one can say that LG has built a world-class gaming monitor. Moreover, the monitor is in the middle price segment. Thus, the LG 24GM77-B are recommended for both hardcore gamers as well as casual gamers. Perhaps even a real find 2014th

Humm, tempted to be one of the first to take the plunge on this! German review seems to praise it but, is that a respected site? Who knows!
