Looking for a new router

So, I am in the market for a nice new router happy to pay up to £80 for a good one. Currently uning Netgear N150 DGN1000

I have a couple of questions first though

1) Current router is a Modem router, firstly what is a modem router and why cant I just buy a normal router?

2) I what situation would I be able to buy a normal router?

A modem connects to the internet. A router allows connections to a network. They're two different things. Though often produced as combined modem / routers.

You can just use a router if you wanted, but you'd need a separate modem to connect to your ISP.

thanks for the answer inogen, I think what was confusing me was the fact that routers exist without the modem part giving me the impression that it was optional or something.

Why do you want a new router?
