Hi guys,

Looking for a new TV to replace my old Samsung 42".

Doesn't need to have any of the smart functions but I see that is pretty much standard now anyway. Not fussed if it has 3d etc also!

I think 50" and above will be perfect, could consider a 48" if it is going to be really good!

Looking to spend up to £750!

Cheers

Yeah but for the price the JL is pretty good, its a rebadged LG which gets really good reviews.

Will take a look at that, cheers.

LG have never been known as a market leader Sony have.

Also JL may very well use LG panels but the electronics driving the panel is just as important as the panel itself.

No point having a rolls royce chassis without a rolls royce engine to drive it.

I have forwarded the suggestion to my dad who need's the TV, knowing him he may go the John Lewis route due to price! but will try get him to go in store and compare if possible!

I have just got back from uni and my dad has now said he wants to get the TV sorted after he never did a few months back.

Going to go to JL tonight, the Sony still the one to go for?

Just got to John Lewis and they have the
SONY BRAVIA KDL55W955 for £729

Is that a better buy than the KDL55W8?

Both tellies are now discontinued, John Lewis may still have stock of both & still be on display. Bearing in mind that they are discontinued, the store where you go could only have the display model in stock & discounted further. I wouldn't buy the display model though, it will have been on during store hours for best part of a year.

It will give him a chance to compare with other models though, I'd still buy from JL due to the 5 year guarantee included with all telly purchases from there.

You will be able to haggle further since it's a store display.

Try and look for marks on it, even tiny ones, etc. For every mark ask for a £XX amount discount or something.

Try and talk to the manager if the sales assistant won't budge.

A mate bought a store display item for half price then the guy came back and said sorry we don't have a box must have thrown it out by accident. He turned around as said I'll take it provided you take another chunk off the price and they were happy to do so. He ended up getting the item for a steal.

Tried and tried but could only get £10 knocked off unfortunately.

Still a good deal IMO and looking forward to seeing it.

it didn't get reviewed very highly.

in fact it doesn't sound good at all but then you have to appreciate they reviewed it at £1500 march last year

for £700 it could be a bargain, does it come with the 5 year warranty? then even more so. keep it for a year then complain about the backlight uniformity issues and shallow blacks. They won't have another model to replace it and it's an impossible fix. They will then need to replace it with a 55" tv with all the same extras and it's a flagship model so likely the only other set that matches it will be high end.

Yeah I did read that very briefly on my phone whilst in the shop but my parents wanted to leave ASAP!

It has the full 5 year warranty and as you say he said they will simply replace it with the flagship model of that year that you claim so I think it is a good deal all round.

I have to say I know nothing about TV's but the picture on this compared with the W8 was basically the same so my dad just went with the fact it was cheaper!

I would've taken the 55" W829 (extremely good reviews!) from Currys at £760, it's Active 3D too rather than Passive. Plus, there are 15% student discount codes knocking about atm for June 2015. You should've definitely gotten more than £10 off for the display model too. If it's not too late, cancel the order and get the one from Currys, you don't change TVs that often.

Still though, on the plus side, it's still a Sony and Sony have done pretty well last couple of years.

3D will never be used so not too fussed about that. I have just had a quick google and just seen that. It is 5% off though on TV's over £500 unfortunately.

Unfortunately that was the best that could be done, it had only just gone on sale according to the print out on the tag so maybe that's why they were hesitating to knock off more. My dad has been a salesman and market trader in the past so not a stranger to bartering but the manager wouldn't budge!

The TV is sat in the lounge so it is too cancel! However it is still in the packaging as we haven't sorted out the old one etc.

I will talk to my dad and see what he says, considering the little saving possible at Currys that knocks it down to the W955 price, he may return the W955 but its doubtful as that one is now in the lounge and its a bit of a faff to return and then go buy the other!
