Im putting together a build for a friend and I'm a bit indecisive over the graphics card.
Ill be using an e6750, 2gb's of DDR2 6400. The power supply is undecided also.
I've been looking at the x1950 pro's, the 7950 GT and also the 8600 GTS.
Any other recommendations are welcome ( max £175-ish to spend on it).

If you shop around, you should be able to find an 8800GTS 320MB for around that price, definitely worth paying the extra over the x1900 series.

What does your friend expect from the system,is he a gamer?

8600gts is not really worth it, if getting a 8600 id get the cheapest 8600gt around then overclock it.

out of the list you have the 7950gt is probably the quickest one but a high rate of failure on the 79 series keeps me away from them.

8600 has lowest power consumption out of that lot listed and its dx10 support is there.

the x1950pro is considered to be quicker than the 8600gt although in reality from what iv seen of my mates overclocked 8600gt its quicker than my x1900xt in some cases. x1950pro also costs more than a 8600gt, 8600gt can be had from as little as 65 quid all in which is deffo worth thinking about.

if i was to buy one card out of that lot listed id go for the 8600gt, main reason being that i want the purevideo HD acceleration with a cool running card with low power consumption to tide me over till december then get something like a g92.

or as posted above if he is a heavy gamer then get the most powerful card he can afford.

Thanks for your reply's guys, and yes he is a fairly heavy gamer. I (personally) think, perhaps a good plan would be to get a (relatively) cheap x1950 pro or 8600, and then in, say, a year and a half, he may possibly be able to afford some form of higher end dx10 card. Depending on the prices of cards at that time.

Do you guys have any ideas/opinions on this?
Thanks for your help again.

For that much? Without any reservation, get a 8800GTS 320Mb.
