Looking for a replacement for a dead monitor

So went to turn the PC on this morning and machine started up but the nothing appeared on screen - It's a fairly old 17" E172FPb Dell TFT that came with the workstation [Dell Precision 360] The green 'on' LED was flashing on/off and the monitor screen would occassionally flicker, hooked it up to another PC and it did the same, went online and looks like its dead according to others - I spose it's lasted about 8 years which isn't that bad.

Anyway the short of it is I need a replacement. Thinking of spending £100-150, would I be right in assuming 22" is the sweetspot in terms of price and size?

The PC outputs to VGA and DVI, though the Dell monitor only took VGA. I'd prefer to use the DVI now which I imagine will be pretty much standard on most monitors, so no need for any fancy outputs like HDMI or DP.

I don't suppose there will be any problems with the Dell workstation graphics [nVidia QuadroFX-500] pushing 1920x1080?

Anyway I'd love some suggestions for a decent monitor in that price range. I've seen the two 22" Asus monitors on TWO which look ok, there a couple of BenQs and there seem to be quite a few 23" Samsungs.

Any help is much appreciated - looking to order today if I can.

Oh right, I didn't realise they were that bad for gaming, though I realise TN are generally considered the best. However, this is not a monitor that will be used for gaming, it's primarily going to be used for work - do you think I'm better off going for a VA panel like the BenQ above or an IPS panel like the Asus VS239H considering my usage scenario?

Personally I prefer an IPS above TN/VA for everything besides watching movies where I prefer VA for the deeper, darker blacks. Webcontent is usually made on a TN or IPS so best viewed on those as well. I'd go for a Dell u2312HM as for some tasks portrait mode can come in handy but if you don't need that than the ASUS is a nice monitor.

Hey Axeia, I actually made an order for the BenQ last night as I need to get the monitor as soon as possible. It was partly based on Baddass' reviews and partly on the price. I do very much appreciate your advice and input though.

My personal monitor is an IPS and I do enjoy using it and I've never been too much of a fan of TN monitors, so the VA choice is also partly curiosity as well I suppose - hopefully it turns out ok!

I've been tempted by the U-series Dell's in the past as a second monitor for myself but in this case the 2312HM is a bit too close to the £200 end of the spectrum. One thing that I was curious about the Asus was the quoted 50,000,000:1 contrast ratio - I know the manufacturer specs are usually exaggerated but in my experience IPS panels usually have some of the lowest figures so that surprised me somewhat?!

Anyway thanks again for your help, I'll remember your advice for the future :-)
