I used to love Diablo. It was probably the first game I would spend all night playing. I'd like to try to recapture some of that magic by getting into some of the older RPGs. Games with a similar style of graphics (i.e. 2D, top down-ish, etc.) as, IMO, they age better than 3D games.

I've heard good things about Baldur's Gate but the videos I've seen show you leading a party of heroes. I much prefer to develop and control just one character.

So, any suggestions?

Titan Quest immortal Throne is outstanding

others worth looking at

Silverfall: earth awakening
fallout + fallout 2

slightly different but good

Gothic 2 Gold

Sacred 2 is pretty good.

Planescape Torment is absolutely oustanding*, but is Baldurs Gate engine so you do have a party (but roleplay only as the nameless one)

*imo the best writing of any videogame ever.

Not sure that Diablo was much of an RPG. More hack and slash. But if you are still after isometric RPG's i would suguest Eschalon book 1/2 and the Avernum series. But they are old style and may not suit your needs.
Ive been looking for a game called Nox but have so far failed. That might be to your taste as well.

>>> Retro RPG
>>> People posting TQ, Sacred and Diablo (and Gothic, unrelated to the list)

I think some people are confusing genres.

I'm pretty sure Baldur's Gate and the follow up Shadows of Amn allow you to play solo, just tell any potential companions you don't want them to join you or kick them out first chance you get. The game scales the difficulty pretty well but certain situations are harder to complete solo. The interaction with the other characters is one of the main strengths of those games though. I've also heard good things about Planescpe and Knights of the Old Republic. Icewind Dale is a Baldur's Gate type game but more combat focussed.

Divine Divinity - I was very surprised by this gem of an RPG I'd never heard of before. I got it as my free game for pre-ordering the Witcher 2, and it's excellent.

It's Diablo crossed with a proper RPG. I've got utterly addicted to it.

Only $5.99 from GOG, and runs well on my modern PC with Windows 7.

Torchlight is very much in the same vein as Diablo.
^ This.
As long as you arent worried about Multiplayer, Torchlight is a perfect game for you.
If you do get it, a program called Torchleech is a must, hundreds of mods, all installable at a click of a button and it does all the mod conflict testing for you.

Torchlight 2 is due out July as well. Very much looking forward to that multiplayer gem.

Controlling the party in Baldurs Gate and Baldurs Gate 2 (BG2 is the single greatest RPG of all time, and anyone who says otherwise is a bitch or a kid and i will fight them with porkchops) isn't a hardship. You dont give orders and let the AI take care of it, you select the character like it's the one you made and control it as if you do your own character... so it's really not like dragging round an idiot group of AI adventurers.

Think of it as controlling your character, 6 times. Very quick once you get the hang of it.

Oh yea, if you havnt played BG + BG2, you really need to do that.

Nothing compares to how perfect and great they are.

Have a look at Demonstone. Its just come up on GoG. Ill be trying it in a few months when ive got through a few other games. Its a hack and slash/RPG.
