Hi guys,

I havent been up to date in a really long time about what's hot or not but i need to purchase a new pc for around £1000 (just the base unit).

What direction should i be going in? Im thinking an i7 930? But i have no idea on the motherboard, memory type etc. Also I think SSDs are all the rage now, are they worth the cash?

I dont really play any games on the PC, i often have lots of programs open at once, some video / graphic work etc.

Also im really looking for the PC to be quiet so if there are any specific components that helps this i'd love to hear about them.

Thanks!

is there anything we can reuse?

eg case, PSU, Optical Drives, HDD etc?

if not, is there any restrictions
eg case size, specific colours, brands etc?

Only thing i have is the OS, nothing else.

I dont really have any restrictions regarding size, colour etc. Although the case does need to have at least 2 USB ports on the front.

An SSD will make the system feel more responsive but they are very expensive for the capacity they offer.

This is an AMD based build you might want to consider:

Phenom II X6 1055T ~ £167

what programs? might save you a lot of money if they arent very cpu hungary

cat fitths spec is very reasonable yet powerful anyway the motherboard he suggests has onboard graphics which if you dont game will be more than good enough if your looking for occasional gaming however you will require a proper graphics card something like a 5770

you dont need to waste loads of money on an i7 unless you do something pretty hardcore with your comp

Here is a review of the Fractal case from Silent PC Review:

I have added some additional cooling fans in case you need them. The case has soundproofing installed.

The Zalman cooler is meant to be one of quietest AMD coolers tested by Frostytech:

The Seasonic X-650 is one of the quietest and most efficient power supplies available:

It is so efficient that the PSU runs passively at low loads and has an 80plus Gold certification. The PSU also has fully modular cabling too.

The advantage of the IGP is that it is passively cooled and hence you don't need a noisy graphics card. IIRC,it is comparable to an HD3450 graphics card.

Thanks for your replies.

I was under the impression that Intel was the one to go for these days, what benefit does the AMD processor provide?

Also i dont currently game on the pc but perhaps would in the future so would like a semi decent graphics card.

In terms of programs, things like photoshop, virtual dub, flash fxp, lots of browsers, premiere etc.

The budget is not set in stone, if theres a benefit to spending more than i am willing to do that.

Buy the graphics card when you need to get a game. The technology moves so quickly it makes more sense to get the graphics card then.

AMD are a lot CHEAPER! they will be still using am3 socket for years to come ullike intel who move socket every 2 mins! and amd are a lot nicer:P
