My dad's looking for a super zoom compact to replace his Samsung PL211 27-270mm equivalent f/3.3-5.9 1/2.3", I was thinking of perhaps the Sony DSC-HX50V, is this a good choice? He is looking for a replacement primarily because he wants more reach for wildlife photos like birds.

If he can stretch the budget and can manage with something a little bigger, I can recommend the Panasonic FZ200, has an amazing lens. f2.8 at an equiv 24x zoom. It's fast and sharp and a great cost effective way to photograph birds.

Just browsing Junes edition of practical photography magazine and they review:

Nikon P520
Canon SX50
Fuji X-S1
Panasonic Lumix FZ200

Nikon came out top except on battery life and non ability to do RAW.

Those are all bridge cameras, my dad's looking for a compact.

I don't really know much about superzoom compacts, my compact wishlist are the Sony RX100 (pricey) and the Canon S110 (cheaper / tiny) neither which meet your zoom requirements.
