Howdy folks,

I'm a big fan of El Dorado 8-year for sipping and a Piña Colada, but am looking for a soft white rum which will be good to use for infusing pineapple, as the flavour of a dark very much dominates.

I don't want anything too paint-strippery. Does anyone have any suggestions? Or is something dead simple like Bacardi the right play here?

If you would happily drink Bacardi out of choice, then use Bacardi. But if you wouldn't touch it with a bargepole, why bother?

Plantation 3 Stars would be your best affordable option that is easy enough to source. Real McCoy 3 Year, Don Q Cristal and Havana Club 3 all decent alternatives - really depends on how you like your rum and what taste profile you are expecting.

Thanks, I'm not really a Bacardi fan but have never used it in this context.

Do you mean Planteray 3 Stars by any chance? This sounds like it might fit the bill, and has a lot of good write-ups.

Plantation are slowly rebranding as Planteray, so that would be the same stuff inside the bottle. You won't be disappointed.

If you have the time and the equipment, try fat-washing your pineapple rum with coconut oil. You can do a little at a time to see if you like it, but you'll add some body to the rum and impart some additional flavour as well.

Ooh I really like this idea.

I fat-washed El Dorado 8-year in cocoa butter once, and it was spectacular!

I feel like Bacardi will be fine because you're just using it as an inoffensive base to get the pineapple flavour, right? No sense in using something expensive

TIL fat washed rum is a thing. I'm intrigued :)
You can fat wash any spirit and get some really interesting and varied results. Doesn't always work and each fat does a different thing, but you ought to give it a try sometime.

Found a recipe for burnt butter rum...Looks like I'm going to have to get some coffee filters!!

On topic:

I've drunk more than my fair share of Bicardi and Havana Club 3 but just seen Pamparo do a white rum. On the strength of their Especial I'd be tempted to give the Blanco a try

Ooh burnt butter fat washing sounds great, I'll give that a go. Usually when I make brown butter sauce I add extra milk powder to give it a bit more flavour - wonder if that will fly with fat washing.

All I can think of at the moment is Koko Kanu, which is a white coconut rum. Not had it for a long time as I rarely drink rum like I used to, however I fondly remember that lovely taste!
