Hi

I have my JMLab 816S speakers hooked up to An Audiolab 8000P and S (old ones from the 80s) but the audiolab seems to be dying a slow death and the GF thinks it's all too big and ugly anyway.

Can anyone suggest a couple of new or used amps that might pair well with the 816S's? This system is for music only.

The 816's are slightly bass light, but quite accurate/ 'quick' speakers so I am guessing an amp on the warmer side might work well? Budget is probably up to £500.

Preferably I would like something that is an integrated pre and power amp if possible as ideally I want to have it out in the room and I don't think the GF will tolerate a '2 box' setup being out. I can put it all away in a cupboard if I have to but cabling will be a bit of a nightmare.

Thanks for any suggestions!

The 8000S is the faulty one. Either there is an issue with a dry joint inside or the input selector has gone as it keeps clicking like pi are changing settings. Had it 'repaired' twice now and it's still not right.

I'll echo hornetstingers comments and advise sticking with Audiolab, 'The Audio Cellar' is a good one for fixing/upgrading them. If you want to change the Tag McLaren kit is similar inside to the Audiolabs but I've found overall better built. I'd certainly advise changing if the Audiolab kit is that with the F serial number - made purely with cheaper Chinese components and sound IMO terrible compared to their predecessors.

And what do women know about Hi-Fi anyway!

haha ok thanks. I am going to have a look for an 8000Q that isn't too overpriced then.

It is acutally 'The Audio Cellar' who has fixed my Audiolab before. I think it is pretty buggered to be honest.

Let's just say I did decide to move away from Audiolab, what sort of thing would I be able to get for around the £500 mark that would be an upgrade? Or are you suggesting I am not going to be able to beat the Audiolab pair without spending a lot?

(I notice prices of the old stuff seem to be higher nowadays than they were when I bought my P & S several years ago)

If you want to keep your pre and grab a decent power amp, then the Nord Class-D amps have been getting a lot of praise over the last year. There's a huge thread on audioshark and 6moons gave them a review not too long ago. I'm looking at one of their multi-channel amps to replace my Lyngdorf/Nakamichi combo for simplicity.

A little over your budget, but not second hand, are UK built, look nice and are easily hidden (if the GF so wishes). The Nord One MP NC252 250W Stereo amp should do the job nicely :D
