Hello. Well Iv had my current system for over 2 years now so its getting a bit old. Im looking at upgrading it but Im not sure what would be the best way to go. Either a new CPU or a GPU. I currently have

Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180 @ 3ghz
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R
Corsair 3GB (3x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS2
8800 GTX

I mostly game on my PC at 1920x1080 and I like them to look good. I really would like to keep my mobo and ram as I cant afford a full system upgrade at this time. Any help would be grately appreciated.

I probably have about £100 to spend at the most

is it struggling at any games you play at the mo..?
save up for a full complete upgrade when the new toys come out at the end of this year and start of next year :D

Excuse me for my stupidity and lack of knowledge - which new toys are coming out apart from the Sandy chip range from Intel and AMD's (is it bulldozer?) chips? GPU wise anyway? Or you mean the whole shazaam i.e. new mobos new sockets etc

TBH I cant really justify throwing £400+ on a new PC so saving up is a no go. Would I see a good performance increase with a Q6600? Are there any GPU's better than my 8800 GTX for round about £100? Im talking either new or second hand on the CPU or GPU here

OH the GPU HAS to be NVidia something to do with my HD TV not getting on with ATI??

yeah afaik an overclock G0 Q6600 will give you a good performance boost and as for gpu question for £100 the msi gtx 460 768mb is on offer for £117 but i think it ends tomorrow.

That card does look good. Is it way better than my 8800GTX? So its either the GTX 460 or a second hand Q6600 and it looks like I only have until tonight to make up my mind???
Will my PSU cope with the GX 4600 its a OCZ Stealth XStream 600W PSU?

Sell your 8800GTX and E2180. Should get £90 for both them. Q6600 and GTX460 from that. Will be a very good upgrade, especially at 1080p. PSU is fine.

Is the GTX 460 much or any longer than my 8800GTX as the 8800 just fits in my case?

Ah just put the 460 in my basket but I forgot about delivery nearly £130 including postage. I know its not much more than £117 but its a psychological thing I suppose. Im not sure now???

Go for it, the GTX460 is an absolutely fantastic card for the price. Also, the 8800 is a very easy card to sell, get a lot of people buying them as Physx cards.

might seem slightly off topic but...
what voltages and FSB did you use to get the 3.0GHz overclock, I am in the process of overclocking mine now

If it's either upgrading the CPU or the graphic card, I say it would be best upgrade the CPU to a 2nd hand Q6600 G0 first rather than the 8800GTX.

Take BFBC2 and Black OPs for example, with a overclocked Q6600 and a 8800GTX, it should still be perfectly playable with may be only a few settings set to medium; however if with your current CPU and a GTX460 768MB, the CPU will become a bottleneck, and I think you would actually end up with lower frame rate than a overclocked Q6600 with a 8800GTX.

Also it depends of what sorts of games you play more...if you play source engine games a lot, CPU upgrade will benefit you much more than graphic card upgrade.
