I picked up my long-term on-again-off-again learning of Japanese earlier this year, and this time around decided to try adding some Japanese media into my learning.
So far I have watched all of Shirokuma Cafe and read a few Doraemon and Crayon Shinchan.
These are the perfect level for me (I guess lower-intermediate) and I've really enjoyed all of them.
The problem is, I don't generally like most of the anime I've seen very much. Ghibli stuff, yes, that's ace. Most of the TV series I've seen, though, haven't really grabbed me. I do want to use anime to practice my listening and general comprehension, but haven't found anything I can get into.
I've since tried Natsume Yuujinchou, Clannad, Toradora, March Comes in Like a Lion and Death Note. Couldn't get into any of them. I guess I don't like all that dramatic, schoolkid-centred, mysterious powers stuff.
Shirokuma Cafe was so great and I miss it! I love the characters, the humour, the setting, the art style. And the Japanese was not too hard to follow, with a nice variety of speaking styles and language-based jokes that give some lovely insights into how Japanese humour can work. Superb voice-acting too. Everything about it was pitch-perfect, imo.
I've searched for a good while, but when I look for "slice-of-life" stuff like SC, I get stuff like Clannad and March Comes in Like a Lion. There must be soemthing else out there! Something not based at a high-school or around the lives of schoolkids. Something without magic or demons. Something wry and light-hearted with everyday Japanese situations and people?
